Grid Guide Teacher NotesGrid Guide Teacher Notes GRADE 1 • SPATIAL REASONING Lesson Objective Students will apply spatial reasoning to navigate a coordinate grid, identifying specific locations using a letter (column) and a number (row). Materials • Chalk or Painter's Tape • Destination Cards • Adventure Grid Slides • Open Space (Floor/Playground) Instructional Sequence 1. Warm-up: Simon Says Directionals 5 Minutes Objective: Prime student brains for directional vocabulary. Play a classic game of "Simon Says" focusing on grid movement terms: Up, Down, Left, Right, Across. Challenge: "Simon says move one step Right." 2. Video Viewing: Grid Locations 10 Minutes Watch 0:00 - 1:33 (Activity 1 - Identifying Locations). Key Discussion Anchors: 0:25 Pause: Ask students to trace the line with their finger on the screen. "Which letter is under the blue block? Which number is next to it?" 0:34 Discuss: "Why do we write 'B3' and not just 'B' or '3'?" (We need both to find the exact meeting point). 1:15 Compare: Notice the blue and red blocks are both in row 3. "How are their addresses different even though they are on the same line?" 3. Activity: Human Grid 15 Minutes Create a 4x4 grid (A-D, 1-4) on the floor using tape or chalk. Set Up: Columns: A, B, C, D Rows: 1, 2, 3, 4 Starting Point: Corner square (A1) Gameplay: Give a student a Destination Card (e.g., C4). The student must walk from A1 to the destination by counting steps "Across" then "Up". 4. Closure: Reflection 5 Minutes "Was it easier to walk to the Column (Letter) first or the Row (Number) first? Why?" Success Criteria Student can identify Column A, B, C, D. Student can identify Row 1, 2, 3, 4. Student can navigate to a coordinate meeting point.
