A Facilitator's Handbook for the Golden Gallery Math Walk
3RD GRADE MATH
Activity Overview
The Golden Gallery Math Walk is a high-movement, high-engagement vocabulary activity designed to reinforce the terminology found in 3rd Grade MCAS assessments. Students act as "Museum Curators," traveling to different "exhibits" (stations) to analyze math concepts, complete tasks, and use academic language in context.
ELL Scaffolds & Supports
1
Visual Anchors: Every station features a prominent visual model (number lines, arrays, area models) to build conceptual understanding before reading.
2
Sentence Frames: Oral language practice is built into every station. Students should be encouraged to speak the frames with a partner before writing.
3
Strategic Grouping: Pair Newcomers or Level 1-2 ELLs with a supportive peer who can model pronunciation and academic vocabulary.
Setup Checklist
Print and laminate the 10 Exhibit Posters .
Space posters around the room's perimeter to allow for movement.
Provide each student with a Curator Notebook worksheet and a clipboard.
Prepare a timer for 3-4 minute intervals per station.
The "Big Ten" MCAS Vocabulary
1. Array / Product Operations (3.OA)
6. Equivalent Fractions (3.NF)
2. Quotient Operations (3.OA)
7. Area Measurement (3.MD)
3. Rounding Base Ten (3.NBT)
8. Perimeter Measurement (3.MD)
4. Sum / Difference Base Ten (3.NBT)
9. Elapsed Time Measurement (3.MD)
5. Fraction Components Fractions (3.NF)
10. Quadrilateral / Partition Geometry (3.G)
During the Walk
Listen for Language: Circulate and prompt students: "Tell me what you see at this exhibit. How do you know that is the denominator?"
Vocabulary Spotlight: If many students struggle at one station (e.g., Elapsed Time), pause the walk for a 1-minute "Spotlight" teaching moment.
Debrief Questions
"Which exhibit was the most challenging to describe? Why?"
"How did the pictures help you understand the words?"
"Which word do you think we will see the most on the MCAS test?"

MCAS Scoring Connection
On MCAS open-response items, students are often required to label their answers (e.g., "square units" for area) and explain their reasoning. The sentence frames used in this gallery walk model the level of detail expected in high-scoring responses. Encourage students to write in complete sentences. All response areas in the worksheet are now designed for 3rd-grade handwriting.
