Adding Three Fractions with Unlike Denominators
Duration
45 Minutes
Target Grade
6th Grade
Format
Active Relay
Lesson Objective
Students will solve problems involving the addition of three fractions with unlike denominators by accurately performing four sequential steps: finding the LCM, renaming fractions, adding numerators, and simplifying improper fractions into mixed numbers.
Relay Setup & Rules
Teams: Divide the class into teams of 4. If you have extra students, they can be "Quality Control" (reviewing the final answer).
Supplies: Each team needs 1 whiteboard, 1 marker, and 1 eraser. Teams should line up single-file behind a "starting line" away from the board.
The "Hand-off": Only one student runs to the board at a time. They complete their specific step, run back, and hand the marker to the next teammate.
Rotation: Students must rotate roles for every new problem. Player 1 (LCM) becomes Player 2 (Renaming) for Rumble 2.
Rumble Answer Key
Rumble 1: 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/6 LCM: 6 | Sum: 6/6 | Final: 1
Rumble 2: 1/4 + 1/2 + 3/8 LCM: 8 | Sum: 9/8 | Final: 1 1/8
Rumble 3: 1/5 + 1/2 + 3/10 LCM: 10 | Sum: 10/10 | Final: 1
Rumble 4: 2/3 + 1/6 + 1/4 LCM: 12 | Sum: 13/12 | Final: 1 1/12
Final Rumble: 3/4 + 1/3 + 1/2 LCM: 12 | Sum: 19/12 | Final: 1 7/12
Strategy Tip
Encourage teams to "coach from the line." Teammates can shout advice, but they cannot touch the marker until it's their turn. This keeps everyone engaged.
Misconception
Watch for "denominator adders." Ensure Racer 3 keeps the LCM as the denominator instead of adding them together (e.g., 6+6+6 = 18).
Pacing Guide
Min 0-5
Warm Up: Speed Switch
Review improper fractions. Do not spend too much time here; it's a mental engine-start.
Min 5-10
Video Review
Focus on the conversion from improper to mixed numbers. Use Mr. J's chalkboard as a model for clear board work.
Min 10-35
Whiteboard Relays
Manage the energy. Check each team's board before they "finish." Award points for accuracy, not just speed.
Min 35-40
Cool Down
Distribute the Rubric. This is the time for quiet reflection after a loud activity.
