DECODING DIVISION
What is Division?
Division is the process of breaking a total starting number down into equal shares or groups.
Dividend ÷ Divisor = Quotient
Total ÷ Groups = Size of Group
Three Clue Types
1
Equal Groups: Sharing items one-by-one.
2
Arrays: Grid matching of rows and columns.
3
Number Lines: Equal jumps backward to zero.
Remember: Every group must be absolutely identical in size!
Slide 2 of 7
CASE FILE #1: 15 ÷ 3
DIFFICULTY: NOVICE // DIVISOR: 3
15 ÷ 3 = 5
Equal Groups
Put 15 items into 3 circles.
3 groups of 5
Array Model
Arrange 15 items in 3 rows.
3 rows × 5 columns
Number Line
Start at 15. Jump backward by 5s.
0 5 10 15
3 jumps of 5 back to 0
Evidence gathered: 15 items divided by 3 rows or groups always equals 5!
Slide 3 of 7
CASE FILE #2: 24 ÷ 4
DIFFICULTY: ACTIVE AGENT // DIVISOR: 4
24 ÷ 4 = 6
Equal Groups
Divide 24 pieces into 4 tactical circles.
4 groups of 6
Array Model
Arrange 24 items in 4 rows.
4 rows × 6 columns
Number Line
Start at 24. Jump backward by 6s.
0 6 12 18 24
4 jumps of 6 back to 0
Equation verified: 24 divided into 4 pieces always leaves 6.
Slide 4 of 7
CASE FILE #3: 42 ÷ 6
DIFFICULTY: ELITE OPERATIVE // DIVISOR: 6
42 ÷ 6 = 7
Equal Groups
Divide 42 targets into 6 drop zones.
6 groups of 7
Array Model
Arrange 42 items in 6 neat rows.
6 rows × 7 columns
Number Line
Start at 42. Jump backward by 7s.
0 7 14 21 28 35 42
6 jumps of 7 back to 0
Case solved: 42 divided into 6 equal areas always leaves 7.

DIVISION KEYWORDS
How to Spot a Division Operation
Keep an eye out for these tactical clue words in word problems!
Clue 1
"Share Equally"
Distributing items evenly among groups.
Clue 2
"Each"
Finding the amount one single person or group receives.
Clue 3
"Cut / Split Up"
Breaking a total length, time, or set into chunks.
Clue 4
"Quotient of"
The official math designation for a division solution.
Tip: Circle these words in your missions to immediately spot the division signal!

Mission Objective: Decipher each division fact by constructing visual evidence. Use equal groups, dot arrays, or double number lines to justify your solutions. Every group must be equal!
Case File 1.1: 18 ÷ 3 = ______ Method: Equal Groups
Draw 18 target markers evenly across the 3 tactical circles below to find the quotient.
Case File 1.2: 20 ÷ 4 = ______ Method: Array Grid
Draw an array with 4 rows. Use dots to distribute 20 total items equally across the rows to find how many columns are needed.
Draw your 4-row array in this space
Case File 1.3: 28 ÷ 7 = ______ Method: Backward Jumps
Start at 28. Draw equal jumps backward of 7 to reach zero. Count how many jumps you took!
