The Base-Ten Magic Law
Place Value Power
What Really Happens?
When you multiply by 10, every digit becomes 10 times greater!
Each digit shifts one place left on the place value chart. This makes the decimal point appear to move one jump to the right!
Golden Shortcut: The number of zeros in the multiplier matches the number of places shifted right!
Multiplier Decimal Move
× 10 (1 zero) 1 space →
× 100 (2 zeros) 2 spaces →→
× 1,000 (3 zeros) 3 spaces →→→
Remember: The number is getting LARGER, so the decimal moves toward the smaller places (right).
2
Visual Shift Lab
Example: 3.475
Start Value 3.475
Initial State (3 ones, 4 tenths, 7 hundredths, 5 thousandths)
3.475 × 10 → 1 zero = 1 jump right
34.75
3.475 × 100 → 2 zeros = 2 jumps right
347.5
3.475 × 1,000 → 3 zeros = 3 jumps right
3,475
When the decimal lands at the far right end, it becomes a whole number!
3
Power Up with Exponents!
Base-10 Notation
Exponent 1
101
= 10
1 zero
Move right 1 place
5.6 × 101 = 56
Exponent 2
102
= 100
2 zeros
Move right 2 places
5.62 × 102 = 562
Exponent 3
103
= 1,000
3 zeros
Move right 3 places
5.621 × 103 = 5,621
Rule of Thumb: The exponent tells you exactly how many jumps to the right!
!
Watch Out: The Empty Spot Trap!
Crucial Skill
What if you run out of digits?
Suppose you need to jump 2 places, but there is only 1 digit after the decimal point!
Annex a Zero!
Fill every empty swoop or open place value with a zero placeholder.
Step-by-Step Breakdown:
6.8 × 100 2 Jumps Needed
6.8_
→ Fill empty spot with 0
Result: 680
Common Mistake: Thinking 6.8 × 100 is 6.800! (That is still just 6.8!)
Always draw your jumps or count place values to see if an empty spot needs a zero!

Power Shift Teacher Guide Educator Blueprint Lesson Facilitation & Pedagogical Guide
Decimal Power Shift: Teacher Guide
STANDARD: 5.NBT.A.2
Pacing: 45–60 Minutes
Learning Objectives:
Explain patterns in the number of zeros and decimal placement when multiplying a decimal by powers of 10.
Use whole-number exponents to denote powers of 10 (\(10^1 = 10\), \(10^2 = 100\), \(10^3 = 1,000\)).
Accurately annex placeholder zeros when shifting decimal points beyond available digits.
Recommended Pacing & Lesson Arc (50 Min Total)
12 Min
Direct Instruction & Visual Shift: Present Decimal Shift Slides (Slides 1–5). Emphasize that multiplying by 10 increases the value tenfold, shifting digits one place left on the place value chart. Connect the exponent number to the number of shifts right.
8 Min
Whiteboard Showdown (Formative Pulse): Slide 6 lightning round. Students write answers on personal dry-erase boards and display simultaneously. Scan for the empty-spot zero-annexing misconception (\(4.9 \times 10^2 = 490\), not \(4.900\)).
20 Min
Agent Decimal Codebreaker Mission: Distribute Agent Decimal Codebreaker Activity . Students work in pairs to decrypt the cipher keys, disable the laser frequencies, and unlock the final passphrase. Circulate to check Stage 3 wire-cut justifications.
10 Min
Debrief & Targeted Practice: Reveal mission success. Assign Power Shift Practice Worksheet for independent mastery, small group intervention, or homework. Review Glitch Hunter error analysis together.
Common Misconceptions & How to Address Them
1. Blindly Tacking on Zeros:
Error: Student writes \(3.4 \times 100 = 3.400\).
Fix: Show that 3.4 and 3.400 are equivalent decimals! The value didn't grow. Prompt: "Did your 3 ones become hundreds?"
2. Shifting the Wrong Way:
Error: Student shifts left and writes \(52.1 \times 10 = 5.21\).
Fix: Ask: "When you multiply by a number greater than 1, should your answer get bigger or smaller?"
Differentiation Strategies
Scaffolds & Support:
Provide laminated place value chart slider slips.
Have students write swoops and physically draw open zero bowls.
Extension & Challenge:
Explore powers of 10 with negative exponents or decimals (\(\times 0.1, 0.01\)).
Tackle the Bonus Mind Bender riddle on Worksheet Page 2.

Case A: Maya's Error 2 PTS
4.5 × 100 = 4.500
Diagnosis (1 pt):
Maya added two zeros to the end of the decimal without shifting the decimal point. 4.5 and 4.500 are equivalent decimals; the value did not increase.
Correct Answer (1 pt): 450
Case B: Tyler's Error 2 PTS
0.07 × 10³ = 700
Diagnosis (1 pt):
Tyler shifted 4 places instead of 3 places. \(10^3\) means 3 jumps right: 0.07 → 0.7 → 7 → 70. He annexed one extra zero.
Correct Answer (1 pt): 70
