5 Slide 5: Understanding Distribution Shapes (Sketch & Describe)

1. Symmetric / Bell

Mound is in the ; both sides taper evenly.

2. Skewed Right

Cluster is on the left; the tail stretches to the .

[ Sketch Right Tail Here ]

3. Skewed Left

Cluster is on the right; the tail stretches to the .

Detective Memory Hack: "The skew is where the is!" (Points toward unusual extreme values)

6 Slide 6: Comparing Two Distributions (The C.S.S. Method)

When comparing two histograms side-by-side, always investigate all 3 letters:

C = CENTER: Identify the value or modal peak interval for each group.

S = SPREAD: Compare the variability or (maximum minus minimum value).

S = SHAPE: Classify each graph as Symmetric, Skewed Right, or .

Slide 7: Final Detective Checklist Before You Graph

□ Equal interval bin widths □ Both X and Y axes labeled □ Touching bars (no spaces between intervals) □ Address Center, Spread, and Shape

a) SHAPE: Describe the distribution shape of each graph (Symmetric, Skewed Right, or Skewed Left).

b) CENTER: Estimate the typical/center age interval for each group. Which group is older?

c) APPLICATION: The gym wants to offer a "Fast-Paced College HIIT Class." Which time should they choose? Justify using histogram data.

! Part 4: Case File Audit (Spot the 3 Graphing Errors)

Critical Inspection

A junior detective submitted the graph below to represent test scores, but made three serious statistical graphing errors. Identify all three mistakes and describe how to correct them.

Bin 1: 50-59 (w=10) • [Space] • Bin 2: 60-64 (w=5) • [Space] • Bin 3: 65-79 (w=15) (No Y-axis label)

Intervention: Remind them numbers on a number line don't have gaps. Only leave a gap if frequency is zero!

Misconception: Unequal Bin Widths

Creating intervals like 0-10 (width 11) then 11-15 (width 5) then 16-30 (width 15).

Intervention: Enforce constant interval spans. Unequal widths visually distort the frequency area.

Higher-Order Questioning Prompts

• Deepening Center: "If a distribution is skewed right, will the mean be greater than or less than the median? Why?" (Greater, because high outliers pull the mean up).

• Critical Evaluation: "What happens to the shape of your histogram if you change the bin size from 5 to 20?" (It becomes smoother but loses granular distribution detail).

Guided Notes Answer Key (Slides Companion) Fast Review

Slide 1: continuous numerical; bars must touch. | Slide 2: Y-axis: Frequency; X-axis: Intervals/Bins; 1. width, 2. count, 3. zero; Golden Rule: count of 0. | Slide 3: Q1: add all frequencies (40); Q2: bins [7-9], [10-12], [13-15] (27); Trap: NO, values are grouped. | Slide 4-6: Min/Max, total n, touching bars (no gaps). Shapes: mound in center; tail to right; tail to left. Skew is where the tail is! C.S.S. = Center, Spread, Shape.

Student Worksheet: Parts 1 & 2 Key Worksheet Page 1

Part 1: Weekend Screen Time

a) Total Students: 6 + 12 + 18 + 10 + 4 = 50 students.

b) Modal Interval: 6–8 hours with a frequency of 18.

c) At least 6 hours: Sum intervals [6-8], [9-11], [12-14]: 18 + 10 + 4 = 32 students (64%).

d) Exactly 7 hours: No. Histograms group data into intervals; individual numbers are hidden.

Part 2: 5K Race Times Table & Graph

Graph Check: 6 contiguous bars; heights: 2, 4, 5, 3, 4, 2. No gaps between bars.

Student Worksheet: Parts 3 & 4 Key Worksheet Page 2

Part 3: Gym Demographics

a) Shapes: Morning is Skewed Left (peak at 50s, left tail). Evening is Skewed Right (peak at 20s, right tail).

b) Center: Morning median interval is 50–59. Evening median interval is 20–29. Morning members are substantially older.

c) Application: Schedule the college HIIT class in the Evening; 32 out of 40 evening members are under 40 years old.

Part 4: Case File Audit (3 Graph Errors)

1. Unequal Bin Widths: Bins have different sizes (10, 5, 15). All intervals must have identical width.

2. Visible Gaps Between Bars: Histogram bars must touch side-by-side to show continuous progression.

3. Missing Y-Axis Label: The vertical axis lacks a "Frequency / Count" label and numeric scale.

Exit Ticket Answer Key & 10-Point Rubric Fast Grading Guide

Q1 (3 pts): a) 8 + 4 = 12 students (1 pt); b) 70–79 (1 pt); c) No, we only know 4 scored in [90-99] (1 pt).

Q2 (4 pts): Table frequencies: 0-9: 1, 10-19: 3, 20-29: 4, 30-39: 2; Total = 10 (2 pts). Graph shows 4 touching bars with heights 1, 3, 4, 2 (2 pts).

Q3 (3 pts): Alpha is symmetric; Beta is skewed right. Alpha has a higher typical center.

Mastery Bands

9 – 10 pts: Mastered (Ready for extensions)

7 – 8 pts: Proficient (Minor graphing fix)

0 – 6 pts: Needs Intervention on bin widths.
