Curve Shifters Lesson Plan Teacher Facilitation Guide
Curve Shifters Lesson Plan
Focus: Quadratic, Exponential, Square Root, & Cubic Transformations
Duration 60 Minutes
Core Objective
Apply vertical/horizontal shifts and scale factors to parent functions using coordinate maps.
IEP Accommodations
Coordinate mapping tables, color-coded transformations, and worked reference models.
Materials Needed
Student Handout, Parent Function Reference Sheet, colored pencils (optional).
Learning Activities & Pacing (LAPs)
LAP 1
Do Now: Parent Recall & Anchor Concepts
Students identify coordinates of key points for \(y=x^2\) and \(y=2^x\). Teacher checks for baseline understanding of coordinate plotting.
Teacher Move: Draw basic curves on the board. Emphasize the starting "vertex" or "anchor point" for each family.
10 mins (0:00 - 0:10)
LAP 2
Problem Set A: Quadratics & Exponential growth
Connect parabola vertex shifts \((h, k)\) to growth shifts. Standard IEP scaffolding provides side-by-side coordinate mapping: \((x,y) \rightarrow (x+h, ay+k)\).
Teacher Move: Model the first exponential example. Highlight that vertical shift \(k\) determines the new horizontal asymptote \(y=k\).
20 mins (0:10 - 0:30)
LAP 3
Problem Set B: Square Roots & Cubics
Introduce domain limits for Square Roots (\(x \ge h\)) and inflection points for Cubics. Visual prompts remind students of graph endpoints vs continuous curves.
Teacher Move: Lead a mini-debrief on why square roots have a "hard stop" starting point, while cubics have a point of inflection that goes infinitely both ways.
20 mins (0:30 - 0:50)
LAP 4
Exit Ticket & Formative Assessment
Independent check. Students execute one square root transformation and one exponential transformation using a coordinate map of their own creation.
Teacher Move: Collect exit tickets at the door. Quickly sort into "Got It", "Minor Mistakes", and "Needs Support" piles for small-group intervention.
10 mins (0:50 - 1:00)
Pro-Tips for High-Scaffold Classrooms
Common Misconception: \(h\)-shift direction Students often shift \(y=f(x-3)\) to the left because of the negative sign. Emphasize: "Inside the house, it does the opposite!" Show that \(x-3=0\) means \(x=3\) (positive shift).
Scaffolding Growth Curves For \(y=2^x\), emphasize that a vertical shift acts as a magnetic field line (asymptote) that the curve approaches but never touches. Make students draw the dotted asymptote first!

Color-Coded Coordinate Mapping Key
We map parent coordinates \((x,y)\) using this formula: \((x,y) \rightarrow (\color{rgb(4,120,87)}{x + h}, \color{rgb(225,29,72)}{a}\color{rgb(37,99,235)}{y} + \color{rgb(217,119,6)}{k})\)
Horizontal Shift (\(h\)) Inside operator: \(x - h\). Opposite direction!
Vertical Scale (\(a\)) Multiply \(y\) values by \(a\). Negative reflects!
Vertical Shift (\(k\)) Outside operator: \(+ k\) goes up, \(- k\) goes down.
Concept 1: Quadratic Shifts (Parabolas)
Standard Vertex: \((h,k)\)
Worked Model
Transform: \(y = \color{rgb(225,29,72)}{2}(x - \color{rgb(4,120,87)}{3})^2 + \color{rgb(217,119,6)}{1}\)
Move right 3, stretch vertically by 2, shift up 1.
\((-1, 1) \rightarrow (2, \color{rose-500}{2\cdot 1}+\color{amber-500}{1}) = \mathbf{(2, 3)}\)
\((0,0) \rightarrow (3, \color{rose-500}{2\cdot 0}+\color{amber-500}{1}) = \mathbf{(3, 1)}\)
\((1, 1) \rightarrow (4, \color{rose-500}{2\cdot 1}+\color{amber-500}{1}) = \mathbf{(4, 3)}\)
Your Turn
Graph: \(y = -(x + \color{rgb(4,120,87)}{1})^2 + \color{rgb(217,119,6)}{4}\)
Fill Table:
Parent \((x,y)\) New \((x,y)\) (-1, 1) (___, ___) (0, 0) (___, ___) (1, 1) (___, ___)

Transforming Square Root & Cubic Curves (Domain Limits & Inflection)
Name
Date
Concept Rules: Domain & Inflection
Pro Reference
Square Root: Restricted Domain
You cannot take the square root of a negative number! The curve starts abruptly at the shifted starting point \((h, k)\). Domain Rule: \(x \ge h\)
Cubic Curve: Point of Inflection
Cubic functions go from negative infinity to positive infinity. They have an Inflection Point at \((h, k)\) where the curve changes curvature from "cupped down" to "cupped up".
Concept 3: Square Root Transformations
Starting point: \((h,k)\)
Worked Model
Transform: \(y = \sqrt{x + \color{rgb(4,120,87)}{3}} - \color{rgb(217,119,6)}{1}\)
Move left 3, down 1. Start point at \((-3, -1)\). Domain: \(x \ge -3\)
\((0, 0) \rightarrow (0\mathbf{-3}, 0\mathbf{-1}) = \mathbf{(-3, -1)}\)
\((1, 1) \rightarrow (1\mathbf{-3}, 1\mathbf{-1}) = \mathbf{(-2, 0)}\)
\((4, 2) \rightarrow (4\mathbf{-3}, 2\mathbf{-1}) = \mathbf{(1, 1)}\)
Your Turn
Graph: \(y = 2\sqrt{x - \color{rgb(4,120,87)}{1}} - \color{rgb(217,119,6)}{2}\)
Fill Table:
Parent \((x,y)\) New \((x,y)\) (0, 0) (___, ___) (1, 1) (___, ___) (4, 2) (___, ___)
Domain Statement: x ≥ ____
Graph Work Area
Concept 4: Cubic Transformations
Inflection point: \((h,k)\)
Worked Model
Transform: \(y = (x - \color{rgb(4,120,87)}{1})^3 + \color{rgb(217,119,6)}{2}\)
Move right 1, up 2. Inflection Center point moves to \((1, 2)\).
\((-1, -1) \rightarrow (-1\mathbf{+1}, -1\mathbf{+2}) = \mathbf{(0, 1)}\)
\((0, 0) \rightarrow (0\mathbf{+1}, 0\mathbf{+2}) = \mathbf{(1, 2)}\)
\((1, 1) \rightarrow (1\mathbf{+1}, 1\mathbf{+2}) = \mathbf{(2, 3)}\)
Your Turn
Graph: \(y = -(x + \color{rgb(4,120,87)}{2})^3 + \color{rgb(217,119,6)}{1}\)
Fill Table:
