Warm-Up: The $5.50 Challenge
5 MIN
Goal: Activate prior knowledge of coin/bill combinations.
Distribute Pocket Change Play Money to small groups.
Task: "Show me exactly $5.50 in two different ways."
Example 1: Five $1 bills and two 25¢ coins.Example 2: One $5 bill and five 10¢ coins.

Play the Cash Clash Slide Deck . Note: The video features Singapore Dollars (SGD), which look different but use the same decimal system and math principles.
Pause Point 1 (0:15 & 0:26)
Ask students to calculate Set A and Set B on their Comparison Master Mats before the narrator reveals the total.
Pause Point 2 (0:34)
Before the symbol appears, have students hold up their Symbol Cards to show if the amounts are >, <, or =.
Strategy Talk (1:13)
Ask: "Did you look at the dollars or the cents first? Why?" (Look at dollars first—if they are different, we already know which is larger!)

Activity: Cash Clash War
20 MIN
Pairs split a Cash Clash Card Deck .
Both players flip one card at the same time.
Each player counts their total money and records it on their Comparison Master Mat .
The player with the greater amount wins both cards.
If totals are equal, it's a "Cash Clash!" Flip three face down and one face up to settle the score.

"If you have 10 coins and I have 2 bills, who has more money? Why is counting more important than just looking at the number of items?"
Pro-Tip
Watch for students who assume "more coins = more money." Example 1 in the video explicitly addresses this (3 coins vs 6 coins, but both equal 60¢). Use this to reinforce that we must always evaluate the value, not just count the physical pieces.
