Reading Passage: The Secret Geometry of Bees
Science & Nature
Honeybees are extraordinary engineers. Inside a beehive, thousands of workers produce wax to construct honeycombs for storing sweet honey and raising young larvae. But why do bees build hexagonal cells with six equal sides instead of circles or squares? Mathematicians have proven that hexagons are the most efficient geometric shape in nature. Unlike circles, hexagons fit tightly against one another with zero wasted gaps. Furthermore, building hexagons requires the absolute minimum perimeter compared to triangles or squares, allowing bees to conserve energy and precious wax.
A. What is the central idea of the passage?
Bees like hexagons because they look beautiful. Hexagons maximize storage while using the least wax.
B. In paragraph 1, what does the word efficient most closely mean?
Brightly colored Working without waste Heavy and slow
2
Constructed Response: Cite Text Evidence
Why would building circular honeycomb cells be less useful for bees? Cite at least one detail from the text to support your answer.
3
Editing Lab: Homophones & Conjunctions
Select the correct homophone:
The bees flew back to [ there / their / they're ] hive before the rain started.
Combine using a coordinating conjunction:
Bees work hard in summer. They rest during freezing winters.
