Why It Builds Thinking
This sequence follows Peter Liljedahl's Building Thinking Classrooms model by starting with an accessible entry point (whole numbers) and increasing complexity through minimal variation. By "thin-slicing" the introduction of halves, fourths, and eighths, students notice the relationship between denominators and number line intervals without being overwhelmed by technical rules. The focus remains on the spatial logic of the number line.

Entry Point: Wholes
You measured 4 sunflowers. Their heights are 5, 6, 5, and 7 inches. Draw a number line from 4 to 8 and plot them.

Halves
Two new sprouts are 5 ½ and 6 ½ inches tall. Where do they fit on your line plot?

Fourths
Four ferns were measured: 5 ¼, 5 ½, 5 ¾, and 6 inches. How many segments do you need between each whole number to plot these accurately?

Eighths (The 5th Grade Jump)
A rare moss grows in small increments: 5 1/8, 5 3/8, and 5 ¼ inches. Plot these on your line. Hint: Look closely at 5 ¼.

What is the difference in height between the tallest plant (7 inches) and the shortest plant (5 1/8 inches)?
Hints For Struggling Students

"I notice you have marked 5 and 6. If you had to plant a seed exactly halfway between them, where would it go? What label would you give it?"

"Think about a dollar bill. If we want to find where a 'fourth' goes, how many quarters are in a whole? How many marks do we need to make four equal spaces?"

"You have 1/8 and 1/4. If you cut your 1/4 section in half again, what size would those new pieces be?"
Extension Idea
"Suppose we found a plant that was 5 3/16 inches. Where would that fit between your eighth-inch marks? Can you predict how many marks we would need between 5 and 6 to show every 16th?"
Consolidation Plan
Bring students to a central board. Highlight three different number lines (one with only halves, one with fourths, and one with eighths). Ask:
"How did the number of 'tick marks' change as our measurements got more precise?"
Connect the visual density of the lines to the size of the denominator. Use a 'Gallery Walk' to see how different groups handled plotting 5 ¼ alongside 5 2/8.
