Define perimeter as the distance around the outside of a two-dimensional shape.

The Hook: The Great Fencing Dilemma
"Imagine you've just adopted a very fast dog named Zoomer. You need to build a fence around your backyard so he doesn't escape. How do you know how much fencing material to buy? We don't need to know the grass inside—we need to know the distance around the edge!"
Direct Instruction (The Blueprint)
1. Definitions: Introduce perimeter using the Anchor Chart . Emphasize that perimeter is a linear measurement (units like cm, in, m) not square units.
2. Regular vs. Irregular: Show a square and an L-shaped figure. Ask: "What's the difference?" Define Regular (all sides equal) vs. Irregular (sides differ).
3. Formulas: Distribute the Graphic Organizer . Walk through the shortcut for squares (\(P = 4 \times s\)) and rectangles (\(P = 2l + 2w\)) vs. the "Add All Sides" method for irregular shapes.

Activity (The Build)
Students work in pairs to solve the Perimeter Puzzle Task Cards . They should use their Graphic Organizers to track formulas and show their calculations for both standard shapes and word problems.
Scaffolding
Provide shapes with pre-marked tick marks for each unit. Use grid paper for irregular shapes to help counting.
Extension
Challenge students to create two different shapes (one regular, one irregular) that have the exact same perimeter.

3 The Reverse Engineer
Finding a side when you know the total perimeter.
Step 1: Add the known sides.
Step 2: Subtract from the total perimeter.
