Lesson: Blueprint Builders (Area & Perimeter)
Grade 5-6
Objective
Students will calculate the area and perimeter of rectangles and squares, demonstrating an understanding of linear vs. square units of measurement.

1. Warm-up: Shape Hunt (5 min)
Challenge students to find as many rectangular or square objects in the classroom as possible.
"Look at the bookshelf, the window, or even your desk. Guess the length and width of one object. How much 'space' do you think it covers?"
2. Video Viewing (10 min)
Watch the video from 0:00 to 4:03. This covers rectangle and square basics.
CRITICAL PAUSE: 2:05
Stop the video and ask: "The narrator says perimeter is in inches, but area is in square inches. Why can't we just use inches for both?"
Key point: Perimeter is a line (1D distance), Area is a surface (2D coverage).
3. Design a Blueprint (20 min)
Distribute the Designer Graph Paper and Treehouse Architect Worksheet.
- Students must design a floor plan with at least 4 distinct rooms.
- Every room must be a rectangle or a square.
- They must label dimensions (e.g., 5 units x 8 units).
- Total floor space = Total Area. Railing needed = Perimeter of each room boundary.
4. Closure: Peer Verify (10 min)
Students swap blueprints. The partner must choose one room on the blueprint and recalculate the area and perimeter to verify the architect's math.

Watch Out For...

| Mixing up A and P | Use metaphors: Perimeter is the "fence" or "railing," Area is the "carpet" or "tiles." |
