Teacher Facilitation Guide: Law of Sines Intervention
Standard
HS.G-SRT.10
Instructional Objective
Students will understand that the Law of Sines is a relationship between the sides and angles of any triangle. They will derive the law by creating an auxiliary altitude and apply it to find missing measures in non-right triangles.
Targeted Tier 2 Support
Scaffolded Derivation: Breaking the proof into three distinct, manageable steps.
Visual Pairing: Using color-coding or arrows to link opposite angles and sides.
Algebraic Frameworks: Providing pre-set proportion templates to reduce cognitive load during setup.
Pacing (45 Min)

Guided Derivation 15 min
Structured Practice 15 min

Hook: "We've mastered SOH-CAH-TOA for right triangles. But look at this triangle—it has no right angle. Our 'old tools' are broken here. How can we use what we know about right triangles to solve this 'unsolvable' one?"
The Altitude (h): "What if we draw a line from the top vertex straight down? We call this an altitude. Now, how many right triangles do we see? (Two). Let's use \( \sin \) to write an equation for that height \( h \) using both sides."
The Connection: "If \( h \) is the same in both triangles, we can set those two expressions equal to each other. This creates our 'Law of Sines'—a bridge connecting angles to their opposite sides."
Misconceptions
Mis-pairing: Students may try to pair an angle with an adjacent side instead of the opposite side.
Cross-Multiplication Errors: Forgetting to multiply the whole side by the sine of the angle.
Calculator Mode: Ensure students are in DEGREE mode, not Radian mode.
Differentiation
Visuals: Encourage students to draw "sight-lines" from the angle to its opposite side.
The "Magic Ratio": For students struggling with algebra, emphasize the constant ratio: \(\frac{\text{side}}{\sin(\text{angle})}\).
Answer Key
1. Sine Scaffolds Worksheet
Derivation Steps:
\( \sin(A) = \frac{h}{b} \implies h = b \cdot \sin(A) \)
\( \sin(B) = \frac{h}{a} \implies h = a \cdot \sin(B) \)
\( b \cdot \sin(A) = a \cdot \sin(B) \)
\( \frac{a}{\sin(A)} = \frac{b}{\sin(B)} \)
Practice Problems:
Prob 1: \( x \approx 12.4 \) cm
Prob 2: \( y \approx 8.9 \) in
Prob 3 (Angle): \( \theta \approx 34.5^\circ \)
2. Angle Check Exit Ticket
Item 1: Side \( c \). Formula: \( \frac{c}{\sin(42^\circ)} = \frac{15}{\sin(75^\circ)} \). Answer: \( c \approx 10.4 \) units.
Item 2: Identify the pair. Pair is \( (B, b) \) and \( (C, c) \). The unknown is \( \angle C \).

Mastering the Law of Sines
Unit: Non-Right Trigonometry
The "Right Triangle" Wall
Up until now, we've used SOH-CAH-TOA to solve triangles.
BUT: SOH-CAH-TOA only works if there is a 90° Angle .
What happens when we meet a triangle that isn't "right"?
A B C No Right Angle!
Architect's Trick: The Altitude
A B h a b
"If we can't find a right triangle, we make one."
From Triangle 1:
\[ \sin(A) = \frac{h}{b} \]
From Triangle 2:
\[ \sin(B) = \frac{h}{a} \]
Connecting the Blueprints
\( h = b \cdot \sin(A) \)
\( h = a \cdot \sin(B) \)
The Law of Sines
\[ \frac{a}{\sin(A)} = \frac{b}{\sin(B)} \]
Sides and their opposite angles are perfectly in sync!
Step 1: Identify the Pairs
The Law of Sines is all about Pairs . Every side has a partner angle directly across from it.
Side \( a \leftrightarrow \angle A \)
Side \( b \leftrightarrow \angle B \)
Side \( c \leftrightarrow \angle C \)
A a B b
Practice 01: Find Side \( x \)
Level 1
80° 40° x 12
The Blueprint:
\[ \frac{x}{\sin(80^\circ)} = \frac{12}{\sin(40^\circ)} \]
Step 1: Cross-multiply.
Step 2: Solve for \( x \).

1 Guided Derivation: The Altitude Trick
Use the diagram to fill in the missing parts of the "blueprint" proof.
A B h a b
Triangle 1 (Left):
\(\sin(A) = \frac{\text{Opp}}{\text{Hyp}} = \frac{h}{\text{___}}\)
Solve for \( h \): \( h = \) ______ \(\cdot \sin(A)\)
Triangle 2 (Right):
\(\sin(B) = \frac{\text{Opp}}{\text{Hyp}} = \frac{h}{\text{___}}\)
Solve for \( h \): \( h = \) ______ \(\cdot \sin(B)\)
Conclusion:
Since \( h = h \), then:
\( b \cdot \sin(A) = a \cdot \sin(B) \)
2 The Law of Sines: Identify the Pairs
Draw a line connecting the angle and its opposite side. Then write the ratio.
52° K 15 m
Setup the Ratio:
\[ \frac{m}{\sin(K)} = \frac{\text{___}}{\sin(\text{___})} \]
38° x 110° 22
Setup the Ratio:
\[ \frac{x}{\sin(\text{___})} = \frac{\text{___}}{\sin(\text{___})} \]
