The Secret of the Limestone Ridge
by Lenny Harper
Leo adjusted his heavy backpack, his boots crunching against the dusty path. Above him, the giant oak trees of southern Indiana swayed gently, casting long shadows across the limestone cliffs. He hurried to keep pace with Grandfather Silas, whose walking stick clicked rhythmically against the rocky trail.
"Keep your eyes sharp, Leo," Silas called back. "Limestone is water-carved stone. Thousands of years ago, great underground rivers hollowed out this ridge, leaving caves and tunnels. The settlers used to seek refuge inside them during sudden storms or bitter winters."
Leo peered at the steep cliffside. Suddenly, a dark, narrow gap between two colossal rocks caught his attention. A chilly, damp draft drifted from the opening, smelling of wet earth and ancient mysteries. Silas stopped and smiled, his eyes twinkling. "Ah, the Whispering Crevice. Few folks know it’s still accessible."
Heart racing with a mix of fear and excitement, Leo turned on his flashlight and ducked inside. The air grew instantly cool. The beam of light danced across sparkling stalactites hanging like icicles from the ceiling. On a smooth limestone wall near the back, Leo spotted something odd—hand-carved initials: J.W. 1852. Beneath it, a small arrow pointed straight down toward a hollow pile of river stones.

This checkpoint targets foundational understanding. Guide students to underline context clues in Vocabulary items, and emphasize that Part B questions in Evidence-Based Selected Response (EBSR) are dependent on their answer in Part A. If Part A is incorrect, Part B is highly likely to be marked incorrect.
Reading Comprehension Keys
Q1 Key: A Standard: RV.2.1 (Context Clues)
Rationale: The text mentions the settlers used caves "during sudden storms or bitter winters," showing that a refuge represents safety or shelter from harsh environmental factors.
Distractor Analysis: B, C, and D do not fit the context of seeking safety during dangerous weather.
Q2 (Part A) Key: B • (Part B) Key: D Standard: RL.2.1 (Inference)
Part A Rationale: Leo showing excitement and ducking into a dark cave is clear evidence of a curious nature.
Part B Rationale: Option D ("Heart racing with a mix of fear and excitement...") directly supports his emotional curiosity and action of entering the unknown setting.
Q3 Rubric: Character & Plot Influence Standard: RL.2.3
Score 2 Points: Student clearly explains that Silas’s description makes Leo fascinated/curious about the cave, directly motivating him to look closely, find the gap, and walk inside.
Score 1 Point: Student states that Silas talked about caves and Leo walked into one, but does not explain the connection of motivation/cause and effect.
Sample Response: "Grandfather Silas explains how historical settlers found protection in the cave. This makes Leo curious, so when he spots the Whispering Crevice, he immediately turns on his light and explores it."
Q4 Key: Summarizing Map Expectation Standard: RL.2.2
Beginning: Silas teaches Leo how limestone is hollowed out by old underground rivers.
Middle: Leo spots a chilly opening in the rock and bravely decides to explore inside.
End: Leo discovers a carved set of initials from 1852 pointing toward a pile of stones.
Q5 Key: B Standard: RL.2.2 (Theme/Setting)
Rationale: Caves naturally encapsulate secrets and treasures. By physically enclosing and concealing the carved initials and arrows for over a century, the setting acts as a vehicle for the theme of historical discovery.
