10 Minutes
Write 38 + 25 on the board. Instruct students to solve this mentally and give a thumb-to-chest when they have a strategy. Do not accept immediate shouted answers.

2. Learn: Standard Algorithms
20 Minutes
Transition to standard written notation. Connect physical base-ten blocks side-by-side with the columns of the standard algorithm.
Addition Modeling (47 + 26)
Draw 4 tens and 7 ones. Add 2 tens and 6 ones. Point out that 7 + 6 = 13 ones. Model trading 10 ones for 1 ten rod, leaving 3 ones in the ones column and placing the new ten rod in the tens column. Write "1" above the tens column and "3" in the ones space.
Subtraction Modeling (62 - 38)
Draw 6 tens and 2 ones. Point out that we cannot subtract 8 ones from 2 ones. Model decomposing 1 ten rod into 10 separate ones. Now we have 5 tens and 12 ones. Cross out 8 ones (leaving 4 ones) and 3 tens (leaving 2 tens).

Students write the full sum of ones directly under the ones column (e.g., writing 13 underneath 7+6, resulting in an answer like 413 instead of 53). Correct this by forcing them to use physical trade mats first.
Subtraction Reversal
Students always subtract the smaller digit from the larger, regardless of position (e.g., in 62 - 38, they perform 8 - 2 = 6, yielding 36 instead of 24). Emphasize: "More on the floor? Go next door!"
