Direct Instruction: Ten Power (15 min)
Use the Ten Power Slides to model the strategy. Focus on the language of "breaking apart" the second addend. Key prompt: "If I have 9, how many more do I need to make a full ten? Where can I get that 1 from?"

Small Group Game: Missing Neighbor Match (15 min)
Students play in pairs using the Missing Neighbor Cards. One student shows a card like "8 + __ = 10". The partner must find the 'Missing Neighbor' (2) to complete the set. This reinforces the benchmark of 10.

Guided Practice: Strategy Sprint (15 min)
Students use dice to generate problems. They must use the Double Ten-Frame Mat to visually move counters to "Make a Ten" before recording the final sum on their Strategy Sprint Sheet.
Teacher Tips & Misconceptions
Common Pitfall
Students may forget to subtract the "borrowed" amount from the second addend (e.g., doing \(9+4\) as \(10+4\) instead of \(10+3\)).
The Fix
Always use two different colored counters. This makes it visually obvious that the piece was moved from one frame to the other, not added from thin air.
Support
Provide cards that already have the ten-frames partially filled. Focus solely on 9 + __ and 8 + __ before moving to 7 or 6.
Extend
Challenge students to solve subtraction problems like \(14 - 6\) using the "Back to Ten" strategy (\(14 - 4 = 10\); \(10 - 2 = 8\)).
