The Building Blocks
Real Part (\(a\))
The "standard" numbers we know. Shown as Blue Tiles.
Imaginary Part (\(bi\))
Multiples of \(i\). Shown as Purple Tiles.
a + bi
Complex Format
Adding Circuits
\[ (3 + 4i) + (2 + 5i) \]
Step 1: Match the Reals
\( 3 + 2 = \mathbf{5} \)
Step 2: Match the Imaginary
\( 4i + 5i = \mathbf{9i} \)
Result: \( 5 + 9i \)
Just like combining like terms!
The Polarity Trap
\[ (10 + 6i) \mathbf{- (4 + 2i)} \]
Watch out! The negative distributes to BOTH terms.
Rewrite as:
\( 10 + 6i \mathbf{ - 4 - 2i} \)
\( (10 - 4) + (6i - 2i) \)
\( 6 + 4i \)
The \(i^2\) Switch
Golden Rule of Circuits:
\[ i^2 = -1 \]
Multiply like FOIL:
\( (2i)(3i) = 6i^2 \)
Flip the Switch:
\( 6(-1) = -6 \)
Whenever you see \(i^2\), change it to \(-1\) and multiply!
Tile Check
If a Blue Box is \(1\)...
And a Purple Bar is \(i\)...
Solve the Circuit:
\[ (3 + 2i) \times 3i \]

Intervention Notes
Common Misconceptions
Treating \(i\) as a variable instead of an imaginary unit.
Failing to distribute negative sign in subtraction.
Forgetting to flip the sign when \(i^2\) becomes \(-1\).
Combining real and imaginary parts into a single term.
Next Steps / Reteaching Needs
Addition Cue
"Match the colors. Blue with Blue, Purple with Purple."
Subtraction Cue
"Flip the switch! Change signs before you combine."
Multiplication Cue
"\(i^2\) is the ejector seat. It jumps out and leaves a \(-1\)."
