Reflecting on the SEYS 775-776 sequence, I have gained a comprehensive understanding of the essential features required to conduct rigorous educational research. First, I learned the importance of theoretical grounding, anchoring my study in Bandura’s social cognitive theory to interpret how parental attitudes shape student self-efficacy. Second, methodological rigor became central as I aligned my research questions with validated instruments like the Math Anxiety Rating Scale (MARS). Third, I discovered the power of data triangulation, synthesizing quantitative survey metrics with qualitative student emotional journals to create a holistic narrative. Fourth, I deepened my sense of ethical responsibility, ensuring student anonymity while navigating the sensitive intersections of family dynamics and academic anxiety. Finally, through iterative peer review and critique circles, I learned that research is a collaborative, evolving process that requires constant refinement of claims based on statistical evidence and colleague feedback.
The symbiotic relationship between research and practice has become the foundation of my professional identity. Research provides the evidentiary sunlight that allows classroom practice to thrive, while practice provides the fertile soil for inquiry. For example, my initial problem of practice was born from observing 9th-grade students exhibiting physical distress—such as shaking hands and avoidance—during Algebra exams. This direct classroom observation fueled my research into the roots of math anxiety. Conversely, my research informed my practice when the data revealed a strong correlation between student engagement and parental math perceptions. This finding led me to replace standard homework help nights with "Math Mindset" workshops specifically designed to help parents foster a growth mindset at home, demonstrating how inquiry directly reshapes the learning environment.
As a researcher, I have learned that my greatest strength lies in my ability to serve as a "data storyteller" who humanizes cold statistics. This journey has personalized the learning experience by forcing me to balance my "teacher's heart" with a "researcher's eye." A pivotal moment of growth occurred during the data cleaning phase of my project. For example, when I encountered a specific response that appeared to be a statistical outlier, I refused to dismiss it. Instead, I spent hours re-analyzing that student’s perception score against their qualitative emotional check-ins. This experience taught me that meaningful research requires a commitment to ensuring that individual student voices are never lost within a statistical mean, revealing my meticulous attention to detail and advocacy for all learners.
Moving forward, I expect to use what I have learned in SEYS 775-776 to transition into a permanent teacher-researcher role. I no longer view classroom challenges as insurmountable obstacles, but as data points for future action research cycles. I plan to implement quarterly research "pulses" in my classroom to measure emotional baseline changes before and after major units. This systematic approach will directly impact my teaching by allowing me to make instructional adjustments based on empirical evidence rather than "gut feelings." Finally, the structure of this course sequence significantly supported my development. Specifically, the scaffolded deadlines and the peer-review "critique circles" were transformative, allowing me to catch gaps in my survey design that I would have otherwise missed. Regarding course improvements, I suggest implementing a "Statistical Bootcamp" earlier in SEYS 775 to better prepare candidates for the complex quantitative analysis required in SEYS 776. Additionally, a workshop on Prompt Engineering for Researchers would be highly beneficial, given the revelatory nature of using ChatGPT in this course. I found ChatGPT to be an invaluable "digital thought partner" that helped me translate complex statistical concepts into accessible findings. While I remained vigilant regarding citation accuracy, the tool fundamentally improved my drafting efficiency, allowing me to dedicate more cognitive energy to qualitative analysis and high-level critical thinking.
