2. Four Forms of a Multi-Digit Number
1. Base-Ten Numeral (Standard) Digits
84,326
Use a comma to separate 3-digit periods from right to left.
2. Number Name (Word Form) Words
“Eighty-four thousand, three hundred twenty-six”
Read the period name at the comma. Never write “and”.
3. Expanded Form (Values) Sum
80,000 + 4,000 + 300 + 20 + 6
Shows the total independent value represented by each digit.
4. Expanded Notation NC Standard
(8 × 10,000) + (4 × 1,000) + (3 × 100)
+ (2 × 10) + (6 × 1)
Multiplies each digit by its unit place value.

Key Concept: The 10-Times Relationship
In a multi-digit whole number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right! (e.g., 80,000 is 10 times greater than 8,000).
