Write \(52 - 27\) stacked vertically. Point to the ones place (\(2 - 7\)). Ask: "If you have 2 cookies, can you give me 7?" (No! More on the floor!).
Step 2: Go Next Door Cross & Trade
Cross out the 5 tens; write 4 above it. Take that 1 ten and trade it for 10 ones. Add to the 2 ones: \(10 + 2 = 12\). Cross out 2, write 12 above it.
Step 3: Subtract Ones then Tens
Subtract the ones: \(12 - 7 = 5\). Then subtract the remaining tens: \(4 - 2 = 2\). Final difference is 25. Check with addition: \(25 + 27 = 52\).

Step 2: Bundle & Carry Bundle 10
Break 15 into 1 ten and 5 ones. Write 5 in the ones column. Send the 1 ten up to the "tens porch/box" above the 4 tens. Draw a little roof or square around it.
Step 3: Add All Tens 1 + 4 + 3 = 8
