Surface Area Inclusion Lesson Plan
Inclusion Co-Teaching Plan Grade 6-7 Math • Geometry & Measurement
Nets, Polyhedrons & Surface Area
Format: Partner Review → Quiz
Modality: Paper Work Analysis
Target Learning Objectives (SWBAT)
1. Nets & Polyhedrons
- Define net as a 2D figure folded into a 3D polyhedron.
- Identify & draw nets for prisms and pyramids using faces and bases.
2. Compare Polyhedrons
- Compare prisms (2 parallel congruent bases) vs pyramids (1 base, triangular faces).
- Describe 3D solid assembled from a given 2D net.
3. Surface Area (SA)
- Define SA as total square units needed to cover all faces.
- Calculate SA using grid nets and rectangular prism formulas.
- Explain solution strategies clearly.
Required IEP / 504 Inclusion Accommodations
Acc 1
Simplify & Repeat Directions: Chunk directions into 1-2 steps; restate in student-friendly terms; have students echo back expectations.
Acc 2
Frequent Questioning Opportunities: Scheduled 2-minute "question pauses", thumbs-check, partner clarify-checks before each transition.
Acc 3
Visuals, Graphs & Charts: Color-coded 3D-to-net anchor charts, Face-Accounting graphic organizer, printed grid templates.
Acc 4
Model End Product: Display an exemplar blank sheet of paper showing exactly how to sketch, label faces, and show calculations.
Co-Teaching Partnership Framework (Parallel / Alternative Support)
General Ed Teacher:
Leads whole-class modeling; controls pacing of partner review timer; circulates to monitor partner discourse.
Inclusion Specialist:
Pre-teaches paper setup at small table; prompts Acc 1 & 2; monitors targeted students' blank-paper recording in real time.
Lesson Materials
- Blank unlined & grid paper
- Cardstock fold-up nets (hands-on)
- Review question task sheet
- Independent Quiz sheet
- Color highlighters (6 colors)
Phase 1 • 15 Mins Explicit Modeling & Exemplar Product Demonstration
Whole Group & Inclusion Co-Support
Step 1: Concept:
Review definition: Surface Area = total square units covering all flat faces. Unfold a physical cardstock cereal box into a 2D flat net to explicitly connect 2D nets ↔ 3D polyhedrons. Compare Prism (2 bases) vs Pyramid (1 base, triangular faces meet at apex).
Step 2: Model End Product (Acc 4):
Inclusion teacher projects and physically holds up the "Exemplar Blank Sheet of Paper". Show students how to divide paper into labeled quadrants: Problem #, 2D Net Sketch, Table of 6 Faces with formulas (\(L \times W\)), and Final Total Sum with unit \(cm^2\).
Step 3: Check (Acc 1 & 2):
Inclusion teacher re-explains directions in 3 short bullet phrases. Prompt: "What must be on your paper before computing? Turn and whisper to your neighbor." Provide 90 seconds for questions with scaffolded sentence starter: "I need clarification on how to label..."

Paper Work Mandate Active
Phase 2 • 20 Mins Structured Partner Review: Blank Paper Protocol
Peer Discourse + Inclusion Push-In
Student Action (Partners A & B):
- Step 1: Read & Clarify: Partner A reads problem aloud; Partner B restates what the question is asking in own words.
- Step 2: Net Sketch: Both draw the net on blank paper. Label faces: Front/Back, Top/Bottom, Left/Right (or Base + Triangular sides for pyramids).
- Step 3: Strategy Discussion: Compare strategies (e.g., \(2(lw + lh + wh)\) vs sum of 6 distinct face areas).
Inclusion Teacher Active Monitoring:
- Direction Repeats: Re-prompt dyads: "Show me where face #3 is recorded."
- Scaffold Graph: Hand pre-lined organizational charts to students struggling with spatial layout on blank paper.
- Prompt Understanding: Ask: "How do you know this net folds into a prism and not a pyramid?"
Phase 3 • 15 Mins Independent Quiz with Mandatory Paper Recording
Individual Accountability
Mandate: Students must solve every problem on their blank paper sheet. The quiz form is only for prompts and final entry; calculations, net diagrams, and face breakdowns are collected on paper for diagnostic analysis.
Accommodated Administration:
Read questions aloud upon request; provide visual anchor strip at desk; allow colored pens to trace matching opposite faces.
Real-Time Observation:
Inclusion teacher carries tracking clipboard noting which students draw nets versus relying solely on memory or formulas.
Submission Protocol:
Staple blank scratch work directly behind the quiz paper. No sheet accepted without labeled face calculations.
Inclusion Teacher Diagnostic: How to Analyze Student Blank Sheets
ERROR ANALYSIS GUIDE
| Observed Pattern on Paper | Root Cause Diagnosis | Targeted Inclusion Intervention |
|---|
| Only 3 or 4 faces computed | Forgot opposite congruent faces (e.g., computed Front, Top, Side only). | Provide 6-box graphic organizer: _[T][B] |
| Multiplies \(L \times W \times H\) | Confuses Surface Area (covering) with Volume (filling space). | Use wrapping paper vs sand model: "Surface Area wraps the box; Volume fills it." Trace square grid units. |
| Net has overlapping faces | Difficulty translating 3D rotation onto 2D flat plane. | Physical manipulation: have student fold hands-on cardstock net to test before drawing. |
| Confuses Prism vs Pyramid | Misses counting bases; treats triangular faces as bases. | Highlight bases in blue, lateral faces in yellow. Prisms = 2 bases; Pyramids = 1 base. |
Follow-Up & Tier 2 Inclusion Intervention (Next Steps) Post-Quiz Action Plan
Sort analyzed blank sheets into three piles: Mastery (85-100%) → proceed to composite 3D figures; Calculation Slip (Net correct, arithmetic error) → 5-minute calculator/check re-take; Conceptual Confusion (Missing faces / Volume confusion) → pull for Day 2 small group with tangible folding nets and color-coded Face-Accounting charts.
Assessment: Partner Review (Formative) • Blank-Paper Work (Diagnostic) • Quiz (Summative)
