Decade Duel Cards
Decade Duel
Number Identification & Place Value Card Game (10–120)
Grades K–2 • 2 Players
Learning Objective
Students identify two- and three-digit decade numbers from 10 to 120, connect numerals to base-ten place value representations (tens and hundreds), and compare quantities using math vocabulary (greater than, less than, and equal to).
How to Play "High Card Clash"
1
Deal the Cards
Player 1 takes Deck A (Blue) and Player 2 takes Deck B (Orange). Shuffle and place face-down as a Draw Pile.
2
Flip Together
On the count of three ("1, 2, 3, FLIP!"), both players flip over their top card into the center Battle Arena.
3
Say & Justify
Each player reads their number aloud and states how many tens it has using the speech frames below.
4
Highest Card Wins
The player with the greater number takes both cards into their Win Pile. If cards tie, initiate a Decade Duel!
Tie-Breaker Rule: If both players flip the same number (e.g. 80 vs 80), shout "DECADE DUEL!" Each places 1 card face down, then flips 1 card face up. Highest face-up card wins all cards!
Required Math Talk • Oral Language Stems
When reading your card:
"My number is ____. It has ____ tens and 0 ones."
When claiming a win:
"____ is greater than ____ because ____ tens is more than ____ tens!"
3 Alternative Ways to Play
1. Lowest Wins (Reverse)
Flip cards normally, but the player with the smaller decade number takes the round! Strengthens "less than" reasoning.
2. Ten-More Challenge
The round winner must correctly name "10 more" or "10 less" than their winning number to bank both cards!
3. Decade Train (Co-op)
Combine both decks and race against a 1-minute timer to sequence all cards in ascending order from 10 up to 120!
