Day 1: Half & Fourth Foundations

Learning Objective

What? Students will be able to plot mixed numbers with halves and fourths on a number line (4.NF.B.3.D).

Why? In order to accurately measure and record the growth of botanical specimens in a real-world scientific context.

How? Students will correctly plot 3 plant heights on a partitioned number line.

Focused Instruction

Explicitly model "Jump to the Whole, then Slice the Rest." Use Slide 3 to show jumping to '1' before finding the half-inch mark. Create anchor chart: "Whole Number First, Fraction Part Next."

Collaborative Learning

Vertical Boards: Groups of 3 work on Slides 3-4. Task: Groups must agree on the exact location of \( 1 \frac{1}{2} \) and \( 2 \frac{1}{4} \) before marking.

Guided Instruction

Circulate to check partitioning. Prompt groups struggling with fourths: "If this is a half, how many more slices do you need to make it four equal pieces?"

Independent Practice

Field Practice Worksheet: Problems 1 and 2 (Halves and Fourths only).

Day 2: Precision with Eighths

Learning Objective

What? Students will be able to partition a number line into eighths to plot mixed numbers (4.NF.B.3.D).

Why? In order to provide precise scientific measurements for rapidly growing bamboo and vines.

How? Students will successfully divide a whole number interval into 8 equal parts on a whiteboard.

Focused Instruction

Explicit modeling of the "Half-Half-Half" strategy for eighths. Create Process Chart: 1 slice = Halves \(\rightarrow\) 3 slices = Fourths \(\rightarrow\) 7 slices = Eighths. Use Slide 6.

Collaborative Learning

Vertical Boards: Groups tackle Slide 5-6. Challenge: Plot \( 3 \frac{3}{4} \) and \( 4 \frac{1}{8} \) on lines with NO pre-drawn markings.

Guided Instruction

Support groups whose "eighths" are uneven. Ask: "Is every plant getting the same amount of space on your line? How can we make the slices fair?"

Independent Practice

Field Practice Worksheet: Problems 3, 4, and 5 (Focus on Eighths).

Day 3: The Equivalence Discovery

Learning Objective

What? Students will explain why two different mixed numbers land on the same spot using equivalent fractions (4.NF.A.1).

Why? In order to understand that different measurement units (half-inches vs. eighth-inches) can describe the same physical height.

How? Students will write an explanation comparing \( 2 \frac{2}{4} \) and \( 2 \frac{4}{8} \).

Focused Instruction

Model equivalence using layered transparent number lines (or Slide 7). Show that the physical location doesn't change when we add more tick marks. Anchor Chart: "Equivalent Fractions = Same Spot."

Collaborative Learning

Vertical Boards: Mission 5 (Slide 7). Plot A and B. Ask: "Why are they 'potmates'? Use math words to defend your answer."

Guided Instruction

Check for "Double Labeling." If a group labels a point with both names, ask: "Which name is better? Why?" Encourage discussion of simplest form.

Day 4: Master Growth Catalog

Learning Objective

What? Students will organize a complex data set of mixed numbers on a number line and compare heights (4.NF.A.2).

Why? In order to manage a full greenhouse catalog and identify the tallest specimens for research.

How? Students will correctly plot 10 specimens and identify the tallest/shortest.

Focused Instruction

Model "Scanning for Ranges." Show how to group the 10 data points into whole number buckets (1s, 2s, 3s, etc.) before plotting. Use Slide 8.

Collaborative Learning

Vertical Boards: Mission 6 (Slide 8). Practice plotting 4 complex points together before starting individual sheets.

Guided Instruction

Assist with scaling. Ensure students are using different types of marks (tall for whole, medium for half, short for eighths) to keep their work organized.

Independent Practice
