Numbers 1 to 12
The numbers live in a circle in counting order. 12 stays at the very top!
Clockwise Way
The hands always walk forward in a circle: 1, 2, 3... all the way to 12!
Two Working Hands
One hand is short and one hand is long. They tell us the exact time!
Chant with me: "Round and round, tick and tock, 1 to 12 upon the clock!"

Grade K • Math (45–50 min)
Tick Tock Time Teacher Guide
Foundational analog clock instruction connecting hours, half-hours, and familiar school routines.
Learning Objectives
- • Differentiate between the short hour hand and long minute hand.
- • Read analog clocks to the hour (:00) and half hour (:30).
- • Draw short hour hands to represent given whole-hour times.
- • Relate analog times to daily routines (arrival, lunch, recess).
Lesson Materials
- • Tick Tock Slides (interactive whole-class presentation).
- • Tick Tock Time Worksheet (2 printed pages per student).
- • Demonstration Judy clock or paper plate teaching clock.
- • Red & blue crayons (blue for hour hand, orange/red for minute).
Lesson Pacing Guide (45 Minutes)
5 Min Hook & Song Sing "Hickory Dickory Dock", introduce clock face.
15 Min Slide Teaching Present Slides 1–6; model short hand vs long hand.
10 Min Body Clocks Kinesthetic arm movement & Slide 7 mystery clocks.
12 Min Worksheet Students complete 2-page practice in pairs/solo.
3 Min Exit Share Show "lunch time" on fingers or demo clock.
Kinesthetic "Body Clocks"
Have children stand up. Their head is 12, feet are 6, left hand is 9, right hand is 3:
- • O'Clock: Left arm stretches straight up to the ceiling (Minute hand on 12).
- • Half Past: Left arm points straight down to toes (Minute hand on 6).
- • Short Arm: Right arm bends at the elbow to be short, pointing to the hour number!
Common Misconceptions
- Saying "12" instead of "O'Clock": Students see the hand pointing at 12 and say "3:12". Remind: "12 at the top means 00 minutes / O'Clock!"
- Drawing hands identical length: Instruct students to draw the hour hand only halfway to the numbers, while minute hand touches the edge.
- Half-past hour hand position: At half past, the hour hand rests halfway between the two numbers, not directly on the number.
Differentiation Strategies
Support (Struggling Learners): Have students color the short hand blue and long hand orange on all clocks before writing. Use a plastic gear clock so students physically feel the minute hand travel to 6 or 12.
