3-Digit Regrouping
When subtracting, always start in the Ones place. If the bottom number is bigger, you must borrow from the neighbor next door!

Check the Ones: More on top? No need to stop! More on the floor? Go next door and get 10 more!

Regroup Tens: Cross off the Tens digit, make it 1 less. Give 10 ones to the Ones place.

Repeat for Hundreds: Do the same if the Tens place needs to borrow from the Hundreds!

Since 4 < 8, we borrow 1 Ten to make it 14 Ones. Then, since 2 Ten < 7 Ten, we borrow 1 Hundred to make it 12 Tens.

You cannot borrow from 0 Tens! Go to the Hundreds place. Borrow 1 Hundred, turn the 0 Tens into 9 Tens, and the Ones into 10 Ones.
Subtracting Across Zeros
Zeros block you from borrowing! Don't let them freeze your game. Walk all the way to the first place value that has value and bring it back step-by-step.

Skip the Empty Neighbor: Since the Tens neighbor has 0, go next door again to the Hundreds place!

The Nine Shortcut: Borrow 1 Hundred. The hundreds digit goes down by 1, the middle zero becomes a 9, and the last zero becomes a 10!

Subtract Normally: Run the standard subtraction algorithm with your newly leveled-up digits.

STATION SETUP INSTRUCTIONS
Station A: Spin & Subtract (3-Digit Regrouping)
Preparation: Print copies of the game board (Page 1) and recording sheets (Page 2) for each pair. Provide paperclips, pencils (to make paperclip spinners), and double-colored plastic counters.
Teacher Tip: Watch for students who subtract the smaller digit from the larger digit regardless of position (e.g., in 634 - 285, doing 5 - 4 = 1 ones). Encourage them to chant the ones rhyme shown on the slides.
Station B: Zero Hero Quest (Subtracting Across Zeros)
Preparation: Print copies of the quest board (Page 1) and recording sheets (Page 2). Provide one standard 6-sided die and 2 game tokens per pair.
Teacher Tip: Ensure students understand the "Zero Shortcut" rule. When borrowing across two zeros (e.g., 500), the first non-zero hundred becomes 1 less, the middle zero becomes a 9, and the ones zero becomes a 10. Emphasize why the middle zero is a 9 (it borrowed 100 and gave 10 of it to the ones).
Station C: Teacher Diagnostic Table (Guided Practice)
Setup: Position yourself at a designated table with dry-erase sleeves, markers, and base-ten blocks (flats, rods, and units).
Diagnostic Focus: Pull 4-6 students at a time. Ask them to physically model 400 - 136 using base-ten blocks. Diagnose if they are exchanging a "flat" for 10 rods, then exchanging 1 "rod" for 10 units before subtracting. This tactile representation bridges the gap to the abstract algorithm.
DIFFERENTIATION & ACCOMMODATIONS
SUPPORT (Scaffolding):
Provide base-ten blocks at Station A and B so struggling students can physically trade tens/hundreds if they get stuck on the paper algorithm. Let them work on 2-digit regrouping problems if 3-digit is overwhelming.
