Common BOY Misconceptions
"Number Plucking": Adding all numbers in sight without reading the story's actual context.
Step-One Stopping: In 2-step problems, finding the first answer and assuming the work is complete.
Operation Confusion: Misinterpreting words like "left" (which may mean subtraction or comparative difference).
1. The Hook (10 Mins)
Crack the Secret Code
Tell students they are "Story Problem Detectives." Show them a simple, giant locked box graphic (or an actual box). Script: "Detectives, we have a locked case. To unlock it, we must read clues, map out parts, and make equations. Are we ready to write equations to crack this open?" Gather around the anchor chart poster. Walk through the "Solver Blueprint" : (1) Find numbers & clue words, (2) Map them in a part-part-whole box, (3) Solve, (4) Double Check.
2. Direct Instruction (15 Mins)
One-Step & Part-Part-Whole
Model a 1-step "Join" problem. Project the slide or write on board: "Ben has 8 blue blocks . He joins them with 5 green blocks . How many blocks does he have in all?"
Model Blueprint Step 1: Point to 8 and 5. Underline "joins" and "in all" to highlight addition.
Model Blueprint Step 2: Draw a Part-Part-Whole (PPW) box. Ask: "Are these numbers parts, or the whole total?" Guide students to realize 8 and 5 are parts. Put them in the bottom boxes. Place a question mark (?) in the top "Whole" box.
Model Blueprint Step 3: Write \(8 + 5 = ?\). Use physical linking cubes to build a tower of 8 and a tower of 5. Snap them together. Count them to get 13. Write \(8 + 5 = 13\).

3. Guided Practice (15 Mins)
Scaling Up to Two Steps
Introduce 2-step problems by structuring them as "Two Mini-Missions" . Use the story from the anchor chart: "Sam has 12 stickers. He gives 4 to Leo. Then Sam buys 5 more."
Step 1: The Take-Away
Question: How many stickers does Sam have after giving 4 to Leo?
Model: Total is 12, part given is 4. Use subtraction.
Equation: \(12 - 4 = 8\).
Step 2: The New Total
Question: What happens when he buys 5 more?
Model: Start with the new part (8) and join another part (5).
Equation: \(8 + 5 = 13\).
*Tip: Keep students actively drawing two separate Part-Part-Whole boxes. Ensure they cross out the "old total" to prevent using 12 again.
4. Independent Work (20 Mins)
Station Rotations
Distribute the Student Worksheet Packet . Let students work in pairs or independently. While students work, pull a target group to practice using the Task Cards . Provide actual physical manipulatives (counters or linking blocks) for concrete math learners.
Differentiated Supports
Support / Scaffolding:
Limit values to within 10 instead of 20.
Provide pre-drawn part-part-whole grids.
Have student color code the text manually.
Extension / Challenge:
Introduce larger numbers up to 50.
Have students write their own "mystery case" story problem and swap with a partner to solve.
5. Assessment & Exit Ticket
Check for Understanding
Provide a single 1-step or 2-step story problem at the end of class. Look for: (1) Correct operation choice, (2) Accurate use of the Part-Part-Whole box, (3) Completion of both steps in a 2-step problem.
