Coefficient

Base 10
n
Exponent
Coefficient \(a\): Must be \(1 \le |a| < 10\) (1 non-zero digit before decimal).
Exponent \(n\): Integer counting the decimal jumps. Sets magnitude.
Exponent Sign Rule
Numbers > 10 (Large) + Positive
Stars, population, distances in space.
0 < Number < 1 (Small) − Negative
Cells, atoms, dust grains, wavelengths.
1 Standard → Scientific Notation
Make \(1 \le a < 10\)
Example 1: Large Number + Exponent
Convert 420,000,000
Place decimal after 4, count jumps from the end:
4.2 0 0 0 0 0 0.
Moved 8 places LEFT → power is +8
Scientific Form: \(4.2 \times 10^8\)
Example 2: Small Decimal − Exponent
Convert 0.000735
Move decimal right until after first non-zero (7):
0.0 0 0 7.3 5
Moved 4 places RIGHT → power is −4
Scientific Form: \(7.35 \times 10^{-4}\)
2 Scientific → Standard Form
Shift Decimal
Example 3: Positive Power Shift RIGHT →
Convert \(6.04 \times 10^5\)
Exponent is +5 → Move decimal 5 places RIGHT:
6 . 0 4 0 0 0 .
2 digits (0, 4) + 3 zeroes added = 5 jumps
Standard Form: 604,000
Example 4: Negative Power Shift LEFT ←
Convert \(3.8 \times 10^{-4}\)
Exponent is −4 → Move decimal 4 places LEFT:
0 . 0 0 0 3 8
1 digit (3) + 3 zeroes added = 4 jumps
Standard Form: 0.00038
3 Common Pitfalls to Avoid
× Bad Coefficient: \(25 \times 10^4\) is NOT scientific notation (\(25 \ge 10\)). Correct: \(2.5 \times 10^5\).
× Exponent Sign: Negative power does NOT mean negative number! \(5 \times 10^{-2} = 0.05 > 0\).
× Counting Zeroes: Count total decimal jumps, NOT just zeroes! \(3.2 \times 10^4 = 32,000\) (3 zeroes).
Quick Direction Rule
Value > 10: Positive (+) Power
0 < Value < 1: Negative (−) Power
Expand (+): Move Decimal →
Expand (−): Move Decimal ←

Coeficiente

10
Base 10
n
Exponente
Ejemplo 3: Potencia Positiva Mover DERECHA →
Convierte \(6.04 \times 10^5\)
6 . 0 4 0 0 0 .
2 dígitos (0, 4) + 3 ceros agregados = 5 saltos
Forma Estándar: 604,000
Ejemplo 4: Potencia Negativa Mover IZQUIERDA ←
Convierte \(3.8 \times 10^{-4}\)
0 . 0 0 0 3 8
1 dígito (3) + 3 ceros agregados = 4 saltos
Forma Estándar: 0.00038
3 Errores Comunes que Debes Evitar
× Coeficiente Inválido: \(25 \times 10^4\) NO es notación científica (\(25 \ge 10\)). Correcto: \(2.5 \times 10^5\).
\(5 \times 10^{-2} = 0.05 > 0\).
