Round 2-digit & 3-digit numbers to the nearest 10 by finding the two neighboring tens and determining which is closer.Round 3-digit numbers to the nearest 100 by finding the two neighboring hundreds and identifying the midpoint.Construct and interpret both horizontal and vertical number lines as visual models for rounding.Formulate general rules for rounding numbers that land exactly on the midpoint (the "Rodeo Midpoint Rule").

The Lesson Trail
1. Warm-Up Wrangling: "Which Town is Closer?"
10 Minutes
Present a real-world scenario: A traveling cowboy is at Mile Marker 23. The closest towns are Tenville (Mile Marker 20) and Twentytown (Mile Marker 30). Where should the cowboy go to get water?
Prompt: "How far away is Tenville? (3 miles). How far is Twentytown? (7 miles). Which town makes the most sense to travel to?"
2. Interactive Rodeo Instruction: Building the Trail
15 Minutes
Introduce horizontal and vertical number lines using the slideshow. Emphasize three steps for rounding:
Find the Boundaries: Determine the two tens or hundreds the target number lies between.Find the Midpoint: Identify the exact middle point (e.g., 25 is midway between 20 and 30).Place the Lasso: Draw an arrow or dot to represent the number, and see which boundary it rounds to.
3. Guided Practice: Corral Partners
15 Minutes
Have students complete Section 1 of the Rounding Roundup Worksheet with a partner. Walk around and look for students placing numbers incorrectly relative to the midpoint.
Watch Out on the Trail! (Common Misconceptions)
The Midpoint Struggle: Students often round down from the midpoint because "it's directly in the middle." Establish the Rodeo Rule: "At 5, you have enough horsepower to ride up to the higher hill!" Boundary Confusion: When rounding to the nearest hundred, students may choose the nearest tens (e.g., rounding 340 to 350 instead of 300). Remind them that rounding to 100 means we only look at the flat hundred numbers.

Students work independently on Section 2 of the worksheet. They should write out the boundaries, midpoint, and show their lasso plot on the number lines. Ensure they transition from rounding 2-digit to 3-digit numbers with identical steps.
5. Back to the Campfire: Debrief & Exit Ticket
10 Minutes
Gather the group. Ask: "How does a vertical number line help us round? Why is 'up' associated with rounding up?" (It models physical height—gravity doesn't pull you down once you crest the midpoint!). Hand out the Rounding Runway Exit Ticket for individual formative assessment.
