Why Do We Round?
Suppose an item at the market costs $14.82 .
You want to know the cost to the nearest whole dollar .
Literal Goal:
Is $14.82 closer to $14.00 or $15.00 ?

Since it is past the middle, it rounds up to $15.00 .
Rounding gives us a simplified approximation of value for easier calculations.

Neighbor is 4 or less? Round Down
The target digit remains completely unchanged.
Neighbor is 5 or more? Round Up
Add exactly 1 (+1) to the target digit.

1. Look-Left Misdirection
Students look left or round multiple digits consecutively from right to left (e.g., rounding 2.45 to tenths by turning 5 into 2.5, then rounding 2.5 to 3). State clearly that only the immediate neighbor controls the decision.
2. The 9-Overload Drop
When rounding digits like 1.96 to tenths, students fail to carry the +1 into the ones column, writing "1.10" or "1.0". Facilitate carrying over as adding $0.10 to $1.90 to make $2.00.
