Warm-Up: Counting Power (5 min)
Review place value concepts. Count individual "ones" blocks and practice trading 10 ones for 1 ten rod. Ensure the student understands the 10:1 ratio.

Intro: The Regrouping Secret (5 min)
Use the Slide Deck. Frame regrouping as a "trade" superpower. "When we have too many ones, they combine to form a mighty ten!"

What is Regrouping?
Regrouping is like trading!
When we have too many ones, we trade 10 of them for 1 ten.
Think of it as making a new group of ten!
When Do We Regroup?
We regroup when the sum of our ones column is 10 or more.
Example: 7 + 5
Start with 7 blocks, add 5 more.
Count them: You have 12 ones!
That is more than 10.
Trade 10 ones for 1 new ten.

1. Warm-Up: Counting with Blocks
5 Minutes
Setup
Have 15-20 individual "ones" blocks and 1 "ten" rod ready.
"Hello there! Today, we're going to learn a really cool math superpower called Regrouping! Before we dive in, let's get our brains warmed up. Can you help me count these Base Ten Blocks?"
Show the ones blocks. Guide the student to count them. If they struggle, break them into smaller groups (groups of 5 or 10).
Ask: "Great! Now, what happens if we have 10 ones? What can we trade them for?"
Guide student to recall that 10 ones can be traded for 1 ten block.
Confirm: "Excellent! You remember your trades! That's going to be super helpful today."
2. Introduction: What is Regrouping?

"Regrouping is like having a special trick to add numbers. Sometimes, when we add the ones, we get a number that's 10 or more. When that happens, we get to use our superpower: we trade those 10 ones for 1 new ten! It's like trading 10 small coins for 1 bigger coin."

"Let's try an example. If I have 7 ones, and I add 5 more, how many do I have? Let's use our blocks." (Count to 12). "Can we make a group of ten? Yes! Let's trade 10 for a ten-block. What's left?"

The Regrouping Mantra
1. Add Ones
Example: 27 + 15
Step 1 (Setup): "Show me 27 with blocks. Now show me 15."
Step 2 (Add Ones): "Push the ones together. 7 + 5 is what? 12! That's too many ones!"
Step 3 (Regroup): "Use the superpower! Trade 10 ones for 1 ten. Move that ten to the tens group. How many ones are left over?" (2 ones).
Step 4 (Add Tens): "Add all the tens. Don't forget the new ten we just traded! 2 + 1 + 1 is 4 tens."
Step 5 (Final): "4 tens and 2 ones. What number is that? 42! Fantastic!"
Repeat with 38 + 24 or 46 + 17 if time allows. Encourage the student to narrate their steps.
