Mastering TEKS 3.4A using the Read, Draw, Write Strategy
The Blueprint Goal
Objective (TEKS 3.4A):
I will solve one- and two-step problems using addition and subtraction within 1,000.
Strategy:
I will use the RDW (Read, Draw, Write) strategy to build my solution.
The RDW Process
Read
Read the problem until you can visualize the story. Ask: "What is happening?" and "What do I need to solve?"
Draw
Create a visual model that shows the relationships in the story. Use tape diagrams or number lines.
Write
Write an equation that matches your drawing. Then, write a complete sentence that answers the question.
Blueprint 01: One-Step
ADDITION
The construction crew delivered 345 bricks in the morning and 278 bricks in the afternoon. How many bricks did they deliver in all?
Draw (Tape Diagram)
345
278
? Total
WRITE (Equation)
345 + 278 = 623
WRITE (Sentence)
The crew delivered 623 bricks in all.
Blueprint 02: Two-Step
MULTI-STEP
The hardware store had 850 hammers. They sold 325 hammers on Monday and 198 hammers on Tuesday. How many hammers are left?
STEP 1: Find total sold
325 + 198 = 523 sold
STEP 2: Subtract from total
850 - 523 = 327 left
850 total
FINAL ANSWER
The store has 327 hammers left.
