GRADE 4 | GEOMETRY
This lesson transforms geometry into a "Quest" for properties. Students move from concrete real-world objects to abstract classifications, culminating in a collaborative anchor chart activity.
Objective
Students will summarize the properties (sides, angles, parallel lines) of five key quadrilaterals: square, rectangle, rhombus, parallelogram, and trapezoid.
Materials Needed
- Poster Paper (1 per group)
- Markers (Variety of colors)
- Rulers (Essential for straight edges!)

Lesson Pacing

Warm-up: Flashcard Frenzy
Use the Shape Shifter Flashcards. Hold up the image and have students call out the name. Flip it to reveal properties. Focus on immediate recognition.

Video Viewing: Quad Quest
Screen the "QUADRILATERALS | GRADE 4" video. Use the following pause points for discussion:
0:45: "What do the kite, phone, and notebook have in common?" (4 sides)
2:25: "What does 'parallel' mean in your own words?" (Lines that never touch)
3:30: "How is a rhombus similar to a square? How is it different?" (Same sides, different angles)
5:26: ⚠️ MANDATORY PAUSE: Keep the chalkboard summary visible while students complete their Sidekick Notes Worksheet.

Activity: Anchor Chart Creation
Split students into 5 groups. Assign each group one shape (Square, Rectangle, Rhombus, Parallelogram, or Trapezoid). They must create a poster including:
- The Shape's Name
- Large Drawing (using rulers!)
- Number of Parallel Sides
- Angle Types (Right vs. Not Right)

Closure: Gallery Walk
Students rotate around the room to view other posters. Challenge: "Find one shape that has NO right angles" or "Find a shape with only 1 pair of parallel sides."
Misconception Alert
Students often think a rhombus must be "diamond-shaped." Remind them that a rhombus is defined by its equal sides and parallel opposite sides, not just its orientation! Also, clarify that a trapezoid is the "odd one out" with only one pair of parallel sides.

Vocabulary & Concepts
The word Quad means FOUR and the word Lateral means SIDES.
When you add up all 4 angles of any quadrilateral, the total is always 360 degrees!
Teacher Note: Some trapezoids (Right Trapezoids) can have right angles, but the video focus for Grade 4 is the general definition of a trapezoid as having only one pair of parallel sides. Accept "No" or "Usually No" for trapezoid angles based on the video context.
