TEACHER FACING MATERIAL • LESSON PLAN
Standards Focus
NC.5.OA.2, NC.5.OA.3
Duration
90-120 Minutes
Objective
Students will translate word problems into expressions and analyze relationships between numerical patterns by graphing.
Materials
Slides, Worksheet, Protocol Pursuit Game , Task Cards, Exit Ticket.
Instructional Sequence
01 Engagement: The Binary Break (10 mins)
Display "glitched" code on slides. Model translating word phrases into expressions with parentheses.
02 Direct Instruction: Expression & Pattern Logic (20 mins)
Model translating phrases (OA.2) and generating/graphing dual patterns (OA.3).
03 Collaborative Activity: Protocol Pursuit Game (30 mins)
Students play Protocol Pursuit in groups of 2-4. They move along the circuit board by solving Encoder (expressions) and Sync (patterns) cards. Players must verify answers using the included System Key.
04 Independent Practice: Pattern Pulse (20 mins)
Students complete the "Pattern Pulse Worksheet" individually to demonstrate mastery.
05 Closure & Exit Ticket (10 mins)
Distribute "Binary Break Exit Ticket".
Teaching Diagnostics
Scaffolding
Provide students with the Logic Lab Task Cards as a pre-game warm-up or for targeted intervention during the game phase.
Visual Supports
Use the Slide Deck's "Visual Mapping" slide as a permanent anchor chart during game play.
Extension
Circuit Stories: Use the advanced problem set for students who master the game quickly.
Game Dev: Have students create their own "Glitch" or "Encoder" cards.
