Ask: “What is a number line? How can it help us?”
Explain that detectives look for clues—on our number lines, the spaces between numbers are clues to where to place each whole number.

Using a large blank number line on chart paper, model placing 0 and 10 at the ends.
Demonstrate dividing into 10 equal spaces, counting out loud as you mark each interval.
Label each point from 0 to 10, explaining that each space equals one unit .

Logic: Between 2 and 6, there are 4 units (6 - 2 = 4). Half of 4 is 2. Starting at 2 and moving 2 units to the right gets us to 4. (Or, 2, 3, 4 , 5, 6).

Students should draw a line, label endpoints 5 and 15, and have 10 equal intervals labelled 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14.
Verify: Endpoints 5 & 15, 10 equal spaces, all points labelled correctly.

Answer: 10
Check for 3 equal jumps starting at 7: 7 → 8 → 9 → 10.
5. Master Challenge
The line should have 0 on the left and 20 on the right. 15 should be placed 3/4 of the way across the line.
Logic: 15 is closer to 20 than to 0. On a line of 20 units, 15 is 15 units from 0 and 5 units from 20.
