Lesson: Graphing Detectives

Grade 2 | Tier 2 Intervention
Learning Objective
Students will represent data in picture and bar graphs (single-unit scale) and solve comparison problems ("How many more/fewer") using the graphed information.
Materials
- Linking cubes (3 colors)
- Graphing Case File (Worksheet)
- Magnifying glasses (optional)

1. WARM UP: SORTING CLUES (5 MINS)
Goal: Activate prior knowledge on categorization.
Script: "Detectives, we have a pile of clues (use cubes or counters) that are all mixed up! To solve this case, we need to organize them. How can we sort these so they are easy to count?"
Action: Have students sort a handful of cubes by color into clear groups. Point out that groups are easier to compare when they are in lines.
2. MODEL: BUILDING THE PICTURE GRAPH (10 MINS)
Goal: Connect concrete objects to a picture representation.
Step 1: Use the "Favorite Detective Tool" data from the slides. Draw a smiley face or simple symbol for each vote.
Scaffolding Tip: Place linking cubes directly onto the graph squares first, then replace them with a drawing. This builds the bridge from concrete to representational.
Questioning: "Which tool has the most votes? How do you know just by looking at the height of the pictures?"
3. GUIDED PRACTICE: CRACKING THE BAR GRAPH (10 MINS)
Goal: Translate picture data to bars and solve comparison problems.
Activity: Use the "Graphing Case File" worksheet. Students will color bars to represent the "Suspect Sightings" data.
Solving "How Many More":
Teach the "Finger Match" strategy: Put one finger on the top of the shorter bar and one on the top of the taller bar. Count the empty boxes in between to find the difference.
Intervention Support & Monitoring
Common Stumbles
- Miscounting: Students may skip a square when drawing or coloring.
Fix: Use a pointer or finger to "touch-count" each box.
- The "More" Confusion: Giving the total instead of the difference.
Fix: Ask, "How many extra squares does this bar have?"
- Starting at 1: Forgetting that the baseline is 0.
Fix: Always check that the coloring starts at the bottom line.
Scaffolded Prompts
To identify "Most/Least":
"Which tower is the tallest?" / "Which line is the shortest?"
To find the total:
"If we put all these cubes into one big pile, how many would we have?"
To compare:
"Lined up side-by-side, how many extra does the winner have?"
Progress Monitoring
During the lesson, look for these specific indicators of mastery:

Can the student place 1 symbol/color for 1 vote consistently?

Can the student identify the category with the most/least without counting?

Can the student solve "How many more" using a subtraction strategy or visual matching?

The Mission:
- Sort your cubes by color.
- Line them up in straight rows.
- Which group is the longest?
The Picture Graph
A Picture Graph uses symbols to show data.
Rules for Detectives:
- Each picture equals 1 vote.
- Pictures must be the same size.
- Lines must be straight.
