To streamline classroom instruction and student work, all practice problems utilize a standard 7-row doubling table.
Efficiency
Students may not use all rows if they follow the "Smaller Number Target" rule.

Standardizing helps you quickly scan student work for doubling errors.
Direct Instruction (15 min)
Walk through Slides 3-5. Emphasize why we stop doubling in Column A once the next double would exceed the target. Model the "Greedy Selection" using the 7-row format shown on the slides.
Guided Application (15 min)
Use Slide 6. Have students identify which number to double before showing the table setup. Note that 12 x 35 only needs 4 rows, leaving 3 rows empty on their "standard" table.
Independent Practice (20 min)
Hand out the worksheet. Monitor for the "Double Both Columns" error. Remind students that their goal is efficiency—it's okay (and often better) to have unused rows at the bottom of their tables.
