Toy Box Counting Lesson Plan
Pre-K Math NY-PK.CC.2 & NY-PK.CC.4
Duration: 35–45 Mins
Counting Toy Box Lesson Plan
Building 1-to-1 correspondence and cardinality (1–5) through purposeful toy play and movement routines.
Learning Targets
- One-to-One Touch: Touch exactly one toy counter per count word spoken (1 to 5).
- Cardinality: Understand that the final number spoken represents "how many" total objects.
- Movement & Play: Perform actions (claps, hops, stomps) matching a quantity 1–5.
Key Vocabulary
Count (1, 2, 3...) How many? Altogether More / Less
Required Classroom Materials
• 1 Mystery Bag with 5 soft toys
• 15-20 Counting bears / toy cars
• 5-Frame Toy Box Counting Mats
• Movement Action Cards (1–5)
• Dot dabbers or stickers
• Interlocking building blocks
Phase 1: Circle Time Movement Warm-Up (8 Mins) Whole Group
Rhythm & Fingerplay: "Five Little Friends in the Toy Box"
"One little toy rolls on the floor (hold 1 finger), along comes another, now there are... TWO! Two little toys jumping for me (hold 2), along comes another, now there are... THREE! Three little toys marching out the door (hold 3), here comes another, now there are... FOUR! Four little toys dancing with a dive (hold 4), here comes the last one, now there are... FIVE!"
Teacher Tip: Have students mirror finger counts from left to right. Pause on each number so children freeze their fingers and shout the numeral together.
Phase 2: "The Mystery Toy Box" Modeling (10 Mins) Direct Instruction
1. Pull & Line Up
Reach into the mystery box and pull out 3 toys. Place them in a neat horizontal line from left to right.
2. The Touch Rule
Model the "Finger Tap": Touch each toy once firmly. Say: "One... Two... Three!" Emphasize one tap per count.
3. Circle & Sweep
Sweep hands around all 3 toys: "How many toys altogether? Three!" Reinforce that the last word tells how many.
Common Misconception Watch: Fast counters who chant "1-2-3-4-5" while only touching 2 toys. Teach the "Sticky Finger" cue: finger stays on the toy until the word is finished!

Part II: Guided Stations & Assessment Counting Small Groups (1–5)
Play Stations & Differentiated Coaching
Phase 3: Small-Group Play Stations (15–20 Mins) Rotational Centers
Station 1: The Toy Garage
Materials: Toy cars and 5-bay parking lot mat.
Students draw a numeral card (1–5) and "drive" that exact quantity of cars into parking bays. They tap each roof: "1, 2, 3 cars parked!"
Key Ask: "Are any bays empty? How many more to make 5?"
Station 2: Teddy Bear Picnic
Materials: 5 teddy bears, play food items.
Students count out plates and feed bears. "Give each of the 4 bears 1 strawberry." Practice matching 1 food item to 1 bear friend.
Key Ask: "Does every bear have one? Count the bears to check!"
Station 3: Block Skyscrapers
Materials: Colored mega-blocks or cubes.
Children build towers matching quantity cards. For every block added, count up aloud: "One block high, two blocks high, three blocks high!"
Key Ask: "Knock it down and count them again as you pack up!"
Active Teacher Coaching Prompts
To check One-to-One Tagging:
"Can your magic counting pointer touch each block one time? Show me slow motion: one... two... three."
To check Cardinality (How Many):
"You counted 1, 2, 3, 4! So how many toy cars are sitting there altogether? (Watch if they say '4' or restart at 1)."
Targeted Support (Emerging)
- Limit active group size to 1, 2, or 3 objects before introducing 4 and 5.
- Use physical linear tracks or egg cartons so toys cannot roll away while counting.
- Provide hand-over-hand physical touch if pointer finger skips objects.
Meaningful Extension (Advancing)
- Count objects in scattered arrangements (not in a straight line).
- Subitizing flash: show a card with 1–3 dots for 1 second, child names number instantly.
- "Give me 5": student counts out 5 items from a larger bowl of 10 items.
Phase 4: High-Five Dismissal Routine (5 Mins) Exit Transition
As children transition to snack or outdoor play, the teacher holds up a hand with 1 to 5 fingers extended. The student counts the fingers: "1, 2, 3!" then gives the teacher that exact number of gentle high fives before heading to line up.
