Whole class movement and sequence building.
Students stand in a circle. One student starts with a number (e.g., 28).
The next student says the next number in sequence (29, 30, etc.).
The Twist: Use yarn to create a physical "chain" as students hold onto it after saying their number.Repeat with new starting numbers (42, 68).

1. Warm Up: Number Line Jump
5 MINUTES
Point to the large number line or 100s chart as you speak.
"Good morning, super counters! Let's get our brains ready with a quick warm-up. Look at our big number line or 100s chart in the classroom. We're going to play 'Number Line Jump' . I'll tell you a number to start at, and a number to stop at, and we'll all point and count together!"
"Ready? Let's start at 10 and jump to 15! Everyone point and count with me: 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15! "
"Fantastic! Let's try another. Start at 25 and jump to 30! Go: 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30! "
"You're doing great! One more: Start at 48 and jump to 52!"
"Excellent jumping, everyone! Give yourselves a pat on the back!"
2. Introduction to Counting On
5 MINUTES
"Today, we're going to become 'counting superheroes' ! Usually, when we count, we start at the number 1, right? One, two, three... But sometimes, we don't need to start at 1. We might want to start counting from a different number. That's called counting on !"
"It's like if you have 15 cookies already, you don't need to count them all from 1 again! You can just start counting from 15 to see how many more you add. Let's look at our slides for a moment."
Advance Slide Deck to Slide 1, then Slide 2, then Slide 3.
"See? We can start at any number and keep going. Watch me. If I start at 23, I say '23... 24, 25, 26!' It's like a number train that's already left the station!"
3. Activity 1: Counting Chain Link
10 MINUTES
Have students stand and form a large circle. Get the yarn/string ready.
"Now, let's play a game called 'Counting Chain Link' ! Everyone, please stand up and find a spot to make a big circle."
"Alright, here's how it works. I'm going to give the first person a starting number. Let's say... 35. That person will say '35'. Then, the person next to them will say the next number, '36'. And the person after that says '37', and so on! We'll go around the circle, each person saying one number, counting on from where the last person left off."
"For an extra special twist, I have this yarn. When you say your number, hold onto the string! We'll make a long, winding counting chain together! It will show us how our numbers are all connected in order."
"Let's try it! Our first starting number will be 42. Who wants to be our starter?"
Choose a student, give them the string. Guide them to say '42' and hold the string. Prompt the next student. Repeat with starting number 68.
