The Exploration Trail

The Safari Greeting (5 mins)
Gather in a circle. Introduce the "Explorer Binoculars" (fingers around eyes). Chant the "Alpha-Beat" together: Clap once for each letter, stomp once for each number 1-10.
"We're looking for letters, what do we see? We're looking for numbers, come count with me!"

The Tactile Jungle (20 mins)
Rotate students through three "Discovery Stations":
Station A: Sand Traces
Trace letters in "Safari Sand" (dyed salt or sand). Feel the grit!
Station B: Dough Numbers
Roll playdough into number shapes 1-10. Squish to count items.
Station C: Animal Count
Use figurines to build small "habitats" based on a rolled die.

The Quest Map (20 mins)
Students use the Tactile Tracker Worksheet. Provide different tools (crayons, markers, or finger-paint) to match student motor needs.
Jungle Behavior Kit
Call & Response
Keep the "Explorer" energy high with these cues:
T: "Explorers, Freeze!"
S: (Hands on binoculars, complete silence)
T: "Ready for the trail?"
S: "Ready to explore!"
Visual Transitions
Use a "Jungle Drum" (or desk tap) to count down transitions.
5-4-3-2-1... Sit like a sloth! (Quiet and slow movements).
Differentiated Path
Scaffolding (Tier 1)
For students struggling with recognition: Use Hand-over-Hand tracing. Focus only on letters in their own name first. Provide "Anchor Cards" with a visual hint (e.g., Apple for A).
Extension (Tier 3)
For advanced learners: Encourage identifying initial sounds ("A is for Ant!"). Have them write the numbers 1-10 without tracing. Introduce simple addition ("If we find 1 snake and 2 birds...").
Pro Tip: Group students by energy level during the "Tactile Jungle" station rotation to manage classroom flow.
