Teacher Resource
Pre-Algebra (7th-8th Grade) • 45-50 Minute Lesson
Learning Objective
Students will solve for unknown variables by applying the geometric properties of complementary and supplementary angles to algebraic expressions.
Materials Needed
Algebraic Angles Slides
Algebraic Angles Worksheet
Calculators
Internet access for YouTube video
01 Warm-up: Equation Refresh (5 min)
Display the Warm-up slide. Have students quickly solve three equations in their notebooks to refresh their algebraic steps:
1. \(2x + 10 = 90\) (Answer: \(x = 40\))
2. \(5x - 5 = 180\) (Answer: \(x = 37\))
3. \(3x + x = 90\) (Answer: \(x = 22.5\))
02 Instruction & Video (10-15 min)
Use the Algebraic Angles Slides to introduce key vocabulary.
Review: Acute, Obtuse, Right (90°), and Straight (180°) angles.
Complementary: Two angles that sum to 90°. (Mnemonic: "C" for Corner or "C" comes before "S").
Supplementary: Two angles that sum to 180°. (Mnemonic: "S" for Straight line).
Video Clip: Watch the segment 3:28 - 7:28 .
Pause at 3:28: Ask students to predict the equation based on the expressions shown on the screen (\(5x+4\) and \(7x-10\)).
03 Activity: Algebraic Angles (20 min)
Distribute the Algebraic Angles Worksheet . Students must:
Identify if the angle pair is Complementary or Supplementary .
Write a linear equation based on that property (e.g., \(Expr_1 + Expr_2 = 90\)).
Solve for the variable \(x\).
Optional: Find the actual degree measure of each angle.
04 Closure: Peer Check (5-10 min)
Have students swap papers with a partner. Partners should verify at least two solutions by:
Plugging the value of \(x\) back into the original expressions on the worksheet.
Adding the resulting degree measures to ensure they equal exactly 90 or 180.
Teaching Tip
If students finish early, challenge them with Problem 3 from the video (the quadratic version) at timestamp 9:02, or have them create their own algebraic angle problem for their partner to solve.
Concept 1
Complementary = 90°
Concept 2
Supplementary = 180°

"Whenever two angles add up to 90, they are complementary."
How to Solve: Step-by-Step
01
Identify
Look at the diagram. Is it a right angle (90°) or a straight line (180°)?
02
Set Up
Write the equation:
\( (Expr_1) + (Expr_2) = Total \)
03
Solve & Check
Solve for \(x\). Plug it back in to verify the angles add up correctly!

Solving for variables in Complementary and Supplementary angle pairs.
Complementary
Total = 90°
Supplementary
Total = 180°
1
Complementary
Equation: \(3x + 30 = 90\)
Answer: \(x = 20\)
Verify: \(3(20) + 30 = 60 + 30 = 90^\circ\)
2
Supplementary
Equation: \(x + 40 + 80 = 180\)
Answer: \(x = 60\)
Verify: \((60 + 40) + 80 = 100 + 80 = 180^\circ\)
3
Complementary
Equation: \((2x + 10) + (x - 10) = 90\)
Answer: \(x = 30\)
Verify: \(2(30)+10=70\) and \(30-10=20\). \(70+20=90^\circ\)
4
Supplementary
Equation: \((5x + 15) + (x + 45) = 180\)
Answer: \(x = 20\)
Verify: \(115 + 65 = 180^\circ\)
5
Supplementary
Equation: \(x + 60 + 70 = 180\)
Answer: \(x = 50\)
Verify: \(50 + 60 + 70 = 180^\circ\)
6
Complementary
Equation: \((4x + 10) + x = 90\)
Answer: \(x = 16\)
Verify: \(4(16)+10=74\) and \(x=16\). \(74+16=90^\circ\)
Checking Tip:
Encourage students to always perform the "Plug-In" check. Even if the algebra is correct, calculating the final degree measures helps students catch calculation errors and reinforces the geometric reality of the problem.
