Approach Hands-On Story
The "Why"
In this lesson, kindergarten students will embark on an 'Addition Adventure' using interactive storytelling and physical manipulatives. By using hands-on activities, students develop a deeper understanding of addition as "putting together."
Materials Needed
• Adventure Quest Slides (Storybook)
• Counting blocks or counters
• Jungle Sums Flashcards
• Addition Practice Worksheet
• Small brown bags (for "discovery kits")
Teaching Tip
When students are solving problems, watch for "counting all" vs "counting on." Encourage those who are ready to say the first number and then count the additions!
Lesson Sequence
1
Introduction: The Explorer's Call 5 Mins
Gather students in a circle. Introduce addition as "putting together." Wear an explorer hat if possible! Explain they are going on a quest where numbers help us discover secrets.
2
Storybook Adventure (Slide Deck) 10 Mins
Present the Adventure Quest Slides . Pause when characters face a challenge (e.g., "If 2 monkeys find 3 bananas, how many bananas in all?"). Let students shout out their guesses.
3
Hands-On Jungle Discovery 15 Mins
Distribute manipulatives. Use the Jungle Sums Flashcards . Show a card, and have students model the problem with their blocks. Ask: "How did you find the total?"
4
Worksheet: Logbook Entry 10 Mins
Hand out the Addition Practice Worksheet . Model the first problem by drawing circles. Allow students to work independently while you circulate and assist.
5
Closure: The Campfire Talk 5 Mins
Return to the circle. Use the Math Talk Guide to discuss strategies. Celebrate the "Discovery of the Day" (the concept of the plus sign!).

Teacher Tip: Listen for students explaining "counting all" vs. "counting on." If a student says "I just knew it," ask "How did your brain find it so fast?"
Teacher Reflection Notes:
02
How did the jungle story help you understand putting things together?
Discuss how the monkeys, lions, and parrots solved problems. Does adding make a group bigger or smaller?
Key Concept: Help students realize that addition always results in a larger total (when adding positive numbers).
Student Observations:
03
What was your favorite discovery on the Addition Adventure?
Allow students to express what they enjoyed and why, fostering a positive math identity.

Expectations for Kindergarteners:
Students should show their work using circles, tally marks, or other simple drawings.
It is normal for some students to still "count all" (starting from 1 for the second group).
Challenge students who find it easy by asking them to "count on" from the larger number.
