Hand out small mirrors. Ask students to find things in the room that look "the same" when the mirror is placed against them (e.g., the letter 'A', their faces, a square tile). Discuss: Why do some things work and others don't?

Unlocking Symmetry
Refer to the Symmetry Secrets Anchor Chart . Define Line Symmetry as a fold line. Demonstrate with paper: fold a heart shape in half to show the perfect match.
Introduce Reflection. Use a grid on the board. Plot a point (2,3) and reflect it across a vertical line. Show how the distance from the line remains identical.

Pattern Block Reflections
Instructions:
1. Divide students into pairs with pattern blocks and a mirror line (tape/string).
2. Partner A builds a shape on one side of the line.
3. Partner B must "reflect" the shape exactly on the other side.
4. Use the mirror to check for accuracy!

What is it?
A mirror line (also called a line of symmetry or axis of reflection) is an imaginary line where a shape or object is reflected. It acts exactly like a real mirror!
