Step 1: The Broad Sweep
Start with questions that eliminate many shapes at once.
Am I a quadrilateral?
(Eliminates everything except 4-sided shapes)
Do I have exactly 3 sides?
(Identifies if you are a triangle)
Step 2: Narrow the Field
Parallel Sides
Do I have exactly one pair of parallel sides? (Trapezoid)
Do I have two pairs of parallel sides? (Parallelogram family)
Right Angles
Do I have any right angles?
Are all of my angles right angles?
Side Lengths
Are all of my sides the same length?
Are only my opposite sides equal?
Advanced Logic
Am I a regular polygon? (Equal sides & angles)
Do I have any obtuse angles?
Step 3: Solve the Case
When you are ready to guess, you must say:
"I suspect I am a NAME because REASON."
*Example: "I am a square because I have 4 equal sides and 4 right angles!"

Learning Objectives
Identify polygons based on their attributes (sides, angles, parallel lines).

Instructional Flow
1. The Hook (5-10 mins)
Use the Polygon Headbanz Slides . Put a 'Trapezoid' card on your forehead. Ask terrible questions first (e.g., "Am I blue?"). Show students how ineffective those are. Then, ask for a "Sleuth Clue." When a student says "You have one pair of parallel sides," model the 'Aha!' moment.
2. Guided Practice (10 mins)
Hand out the Sleuth Question Guide . Review terms like quadrilateral , parallel , right angle , and regular polygon . Practice "Broad Sweep" vs. "Narrow Field" questions as a class.
3. Collaborative Play (25 mins)
Students play in groups of 3-4. One student is the "Sleuth" (wearing the card), others are "Informants" (answering Yes/No). Rotate roles every 5 minutes.
Support
Give students a "Shape Bank" (a sheet with all 8 card images) so they can physically cross out shapes that don't match the clues.
Challenge
Limit the Sleuth to exactly 5 questions . They must be strategic to solve the case with a minimal "Evidence Trail."
