Objective
Students will understand that non-standard units lead to inconsistent measurements and communicate the necessity of a universal system (Standard Units).
The Hook: "The Giant's Shoes"
Enter the room wearing one normal shoe and one oversized cutout shoe (or just hold a giant paper foot). Tell students you need to buy a rug that is "3 feet long." Ask a student to measure out 3 of their feet on the floor. Then, you measure out 3 of your giant feet. Compare the lengths!

"Why did our desk have two different 'foot' measurements?"
Expect: Because our feet are different sizes! A small person needs more steps than a tall person.
"What problems would happen if scientists used their own hands to measure things?"
Expect: They wouldn't get the same results. Experiments might fail. People wouldn't understand each other.
"Is an inch on my ruler different from an inch on your ruler?"
Expect: No! They are exactly the same. That's why it's 'standard'.
Common Misconceptions
Unit vs. Length: Students might think the object itself changed size rather than the unit of measurement. Emphasize: "The desk stayed the same, but the tool we used was different."
Standard = Better? Some students may think non-standard units are "wrong." Clarify that they are just "not consistent" for communicating with others.
