• Starting at "1" instead of "0"
• Leaving gaps when moving sticks
• Choosing a tool too small for the job
• Measuring "diagonal" instead of straight
Small Group Routine
1 Model & "Think Aloud" (5 mins)
Show a pencil. Ask: "Would I use a long yardstick for this? No, it's too big and clumsy!" Show how to line up the edge of the eraser with the 0 mark . Stress that the 0 is not always the end of the ruler.
2 Guided Tool Selection (5 mins)
Hold up different items (paperclip, desk, door width, ball). For each, have students point to the tool on the Tool Choice Guide . Ask: "Why that tool?"
3 Scaffolded Practice (15 mins)
Release students to the 3 stations. Circulate and check for the "zero-mark" alignment. If a student struggles, use the Hand-over-Hand technique to help them steady the tool.
Tier 2 "Check & Prompt"
If they start at 1...
Prompt: "I see your pencil starts at the 1. Where does the length of the pencil actually begin? Let's slide it back to the starting line."
If they use the wrong tool...
Prompt: "You're using a ruler for the rug. Is that easy or hard? Which tool is as long as your arm that might be faster?"

Don't Forget the Start!
Always look for the 0 line. Some tools have a little space before the 0. Line your object up right on that line for a perfect measure!
