The Population
Every Adult in the US
Too many to count! This is the "Truth" we want to find.
The Sample
The 1,050 Interviewed
The small group we actually talked to.
The Inference
The "62%" Guess
We use the sample to "infer" what the whole population thinks.

Population → Parameter
The Population is the entire group.
A Parameter is a fixed number that describes that whole population. (Usually unknown!)

If you only ask your friends about school lunches, your data is Biased. Randomness ensures the sample looks like the whole population!

The Hook (5 min)
Start by asking: "If you wanted to know if a pot of soup was too salty, would you have to eat the whole pot?"
Lead them to the idea of a spoonful (the sample). The spoonful tells you about the whole pot (the population). If the spoonful is salty (the statistic), you infer the whole pot is salty (the parameter).
Guided Practice (15-20 min)
Key Concept: The Alliteration Hack
Reinforce that Population goes with Parameter, and Sample goes with Statistic. Students often mix these up. Keep repeating this pairing during the slides.
Misconception Watch
Students often think the statistic is the truth. Clarify that the statistic is just a clue. We never truly know the parameter unless we ask everyone (which is usually impossible).
Questioning Strategy
- "If we chose a different random sample of 50 students, would we get the exact same statistic? Why not?" (Leads to understanding of sampling variability).
- "What happens to our 'guess' (inference) if our sample size gets bigger?" (Leads to understanding that larger samples provide better estimates).
Tiered Support
For Students Struggling
Use physical manipulatives. A bowl of colored beads can represent the population. A small cup can represent the sample. Physically count the beads in the "sample cup" to find the statistic.
For Students Ready to Move On
Ask them to design their own survey. What would be the population? How would they ensure the sample is truly random and not biased?
