Ratios (Simplifying)
Compare two amounts
Rule: Treat ratios like fractions. Divide both numbers by the same common factor to simplify!

Simplify the ratio 8 : 12
1. Divide both numbers by 4
2. \(8 \div 4 = \mathbf{2}\) and \(12 \div 4 = \mathbf{3}\)

Greatest Common Factor (GCF)
Largest number that divides into both
Rule: List the factors of each number. Pick the greatest factor they share!

Absolute Value: \(|x|\)
Distance from Zero
Rule: Absolute value is simply how many steps a number is from zero. Distance is always positive or zero!

\(|7|\) 7 steps from 0 → 7
\(|-7|\) 7 steps from 0 → 7
Both \(7\) and \(-7\) are 7 units away from 0!

Comparing with \( < \), \( > \), or \( = \)
Number line position
Rule: Further right on the number line = greater value. For negatives, closer to 0 is bigger!

\(|-6|\) > \(4\) Because \(6 > 4\)
The alligator mouth always opens toward the bigger number!

Ordering: Least to Greatest
From Left to Right
Rule: 1) Put negatives first (deepest negative is smallest). 2) Put zero in the middle. 3) Put positives last!
