Standard Algorithm Guide
Name: _______________________ Date: ____________
1
Shift Divisor: Move the divisor's decimal to make it a whole number.
2
Match Dividend: Move the dividend's decimal the exact same number of places.
3
Lift Point: Float the decimal point straight up into the quotient space.
4
Standard Process: Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring Down (DMSB).
5
Add Zeros: If you have a remainder, add a zero and keep dividing.

Placeholder Zeros
Add zeros if you need to move the decimal further than you have digits: \( 3.4 \div 0.02 \rightarrow 340 \div 2 \).
Verification
Check your work with multiplication:
Quotient \(\times\) Divisor \(=\) Original Dividend
Pro Strategy: Estimation
Round numbers before you start. For \( 19.8 \div 4.1 \), think \( 20 \div 4 = 5 \). Catch decimal placement errors before you even finish the problem!
