How to play it safe: Emergencies can happen anytime. Your goal is to choose the option that keeps you and others safe, prevents further danger, and knows when to call for help. Check the circle next to your answer choice.

Home Safety Scenario 1

A grease fire bursts into flames inside your frying pan while you are cooking.

A. Throw a cup of cold water directly onto the pan to put the fire out quickly.

B. Turn off the burner, slide a metal lid over the pan, and use baking soda or a fire extinguisher.

C. Pick up the hot pan and run outside to throw it into the yard.

Home Safety Scenario 2

You walk into your apartment and smell a very strong odor of rotten eggs (gas leak).

A. Turn on all the kitchen lights and light a candle to see where the smell is coming from.

B. Open a window, sit on the couch, and wait to see if the smell goes away on its own.

C. Leave the apartment immediately, leave the door open, and call 911 or the gas company from outside.

Home Safety Scenario 3

It is a freezing winter night and your home suddenly loses all electrical power.

A. Turn on the gas oven and leave the oven door wide open to heat up the house.

B. Bundle up in layers of warm clothes and blankets, and report the outage to the utility company.

C. Light scented candles next to your pillows to keep warm while you sleep.

Scenarios 4 – 7

Home Safety Scenario 4

A water pipe bursts under your bathroom sink, spraying water rapidly across the floor.

A. Locate and turn the water shut-off valve under the sink clockwise to stop the water flow immediately.

B. Throw a bath towel on the puddle and wait for your weekly landlord inspection.

C. Pack your bags and leave for a hotel until the water runs out of the pipes.

Home Safety Scenario 5

A stranger in a safety vest knocks aggressively, claiming they must enter to check your water lines.

A. Unlock the deadbolt and let them inside quickly so they can complete their inspection.

B. Keep the door locked, ask for company ID through the window, and call the utility company to verify.

C. Stay completely silent, ignore them entirely, and go to your bedroom to sleep.

Home Safety Scenario 6

While cleaning the bathroom, chemical bathroom bleach accidentally splashes directly into your eyes.

A. Rub your eyes vigorously with a dry towel to wipe away the chemical residue.

B. Immediately flush your eyes with cool, clean running water for 15 minutes and seek medical advice.

C. Apply standard cosmetic eye drops and continue cleaning so you don't fall behind.

Your slice of bread catches fire inside your toaster oven, producing dark smoke.

A. Safely unplug the appliance, keep the door closed, and use baking soda or a fire extinguisher.

B. Pour a cold glass of sugary juice or soda directly into the toaster vents.

C. Use a long metal kitchen fork to scrape the burning pieces out of the slot.

Scenarios 8 – 11

Transit Safety Scenario 8

You miss your planned transit stop and find yourself stranded in an unfamiliar, dark area at dusk.

A. Walk down nearby dark side alleys to search for any familiar landmarks or shortcuts.

B. Stay in a well-lit, public business area, check a transit app, or call a trusted contact.

C. Knock on the nearest home door to ask a stranger to drive you back to your house.

Transit Safety Scenario 9

You notice an unknown person following you very closely for several blocks.

A. Stop immediately, turn around, and yell aggressively at them to stop following you.

B. Walk directly into a busy, open public store or business and ask a staff member for assistance.

C. Run as fast as you can straight to your home and try to open your front lock.

Transit Safety Scenario 10

You realize your wallet or backpack was left behind on a transit car just as doors shut.

A. Pry the automatic safety doors open or jump onto the track to pursue the vehicle.

B. Inform a station transit official immediately, file a claim, and block any lost payment cards.

C. Wait patiently at the station gate for 8-10 hours hoping the exact same car returns to you.

Transit Safety Scenario 11

You are walking home when a severe thunderstorm starts with immediate overhead lightning.

A. Walk and stand directly beneath a tall, isolated tree to keep dry.

B. Lie completely flat on your stomach in the middle of a large grass park.

C. Seek shelter inside a solid, enclosed structure or a fully closed metal car.

Scenarios 12 – 15

Transit Safety Scenario 12

The walking walk/don't walk pedestrian signal light is completely dark and broken at a busy road.

A. Run out into traffic as fast as possible to make the cars yield for you.

B. Cross only when there is an absolute, clear break in traffic, or travel to the nearest active light.

C. Step onto the crosswalk with your eyes closed, assuming traffic will naturally halt.

Transit Safety Scenario 13

An older adult trips, falls on the concrete sidewalk in front of you, and seems in severe pain.

A. Pull them up sharply by their shoulders or hands to get them on their feet immediately.

B. Ask how they are, tell them not to move, check for clear injuries, and call 911 if they are in pain or hurt.

C. Walk quickly past them and pretend you did not see anything happen.

Transit Safety Scenario 14

Your subway train stops completely inside a dark transit tunnel and the conductor requests patience.

A. Pull the emergency door lever, exit the train, and walk down the dark train tracks.

B. Remain calmly seated in your train car, stay quiet, and listen closely to intercom instructions.

C. Stand up and shout loudly to warn everyone that the train is trapped.

Workplace Safety Scenario 15

A large plastic bottle of unknown workplace cleaning chemical falls and leaks all over the breakroom.

A. Clean up the spill using bare hands and thin paper towels as quickly as possible.

B. Take a deep sniff of the vapors to determine what it is, then ignore the liquid.

C. Inform your supervisor immediately, block off the area, and review the safety data sheet (SDS).

Workplace Safety Scenario 16

The workplace fire alarm flashes and blares loudly while you are working alone in the rear supply room.

A. Stay and finish organizing your designated stock shelves before heading toward an exit.

B. Immediately walk to the nearest fire exit, leave the building, and join colleagues at the assembly zone.

C. Wander around the store corridors to locate the exact cause of the alert.

Workplace Safety Scenario 17

An electronic power tool you are operating starts grinding loudly and releasing smoke.

A. Keep working until the end of your shift, then leave a note on the tool.

B. Immediately power it off, safely unplug it if dry, and alert your team supervisor.

C. Spray cold tap water into the smoking electrical motor while it is still running.

Workplace Safety Scenario 18

A coworker asks you to quickly lift a heavy 100 lb box that has a safety "Team Lift Only" symbol.

A. Bend at your waist and lift with your lower back to prove you are strong enough.

B. Politely remind them of the safe team-lift standard, use proper lifting, or get a hand truck.

C. Drop the project immediately and walk out of the facility without telling anyone.

An upset customer starts yelling at you at the store cash register over a tiny pricing policy.

A. Shout back even louder to establish your authority in the store.

B. Stay calm, speak in a quiet, professional voice, and call a manager over to support you.

C. Leave the cash register completely open and run out of the store to crying.

A. Wipe the blood onto your work uniform and keep scanning retail boxes.

C. Wrap the cut in heavy packaging tape and wait until you return home to clean it.
