The CAUSE . This is the variable that changes first or stays the same on its own.
The "I Control" Variable
Dependent Variable
The EFFECT . This variable changes because of the independent variable.
The "Result" Variable
The Secret Formula
"The Dependent Variable depends on the Independent Variable."

Objective
Students will correctly identify the independent (cause) and dependent (effect) variables in real-world scenarios using a "depends on" sentence frame with 80% accuracy.
Key Terms
Independent Variable: The "Action" (Cause)
Dependent Variable: The "Result" (Effect)
Proportional Relationship: Balanced change
LESSON STAGES
1
Hook: The "If-Then" Challenge (5 min)
Start with simple daily actions. Ask students: "If I press the power button on my controller, what happens?" (The game turns on). Explain that the button press is the cause, and the game turning on is the result. This is exactly what we're learning today in math!
Discussion Prompt
"Can the game turn on without you pressing the button? No! So the game turning on **depends on** the button."
2
Direct Instruction (15 min)
Use the Variable Victories Slides . Focus heavily on Slide 3 (The Secret Formula). Have students repeat the sentence: "The [Dependent Variable] depends on the [Independent Variable]."
Example: "The **Cost** depends on the **Number of T-Shirts**."
3
Guided Practice: Variable Victory Log (20 min)
Hand out the worksheet. Complete Quest 1 and the first Scenario (Quest 2) together as a class. Model the "check" by trying to say the sentence backwards to show why it doesn't make sense (e.g., "The hours played depend on the XP earned" — wait, that's not right!).
4
Independent "Boss Battle" & Exit Ticket (10 min)
Students complete Quest 3 on the worksheet. If they finish early, they can create a second scenario on the back. Close with the Exit Ticket to assess mastery.
SPED DIFFERENTIATION TIPS
Visual Supports
Color-code variables (e.g., Independent = Green/Go, Dependent = Red/Result).
Use physical coins or items to show shopping scenarios.
Processing Support
Provide a "formula strip" for students to keep at their desks.
Allow verbal responses for Quest 3 (The Boss Battle).
